Accident of a different kind....

Warning, this is not for the faint hearted ..

Yesterday afternoon we received a phone call from a lady friend of ours who just moved real close to where we live with her husband at the back of their kids place they just 80% finished renovating a small bungalow say 300 metres from our place. They are in their early sixties , just retired.

She called and was in total shock. She said : A terrible accident happened ,Trevor has just chopped his hand off, he was using a circular saw and he cut it between the wrist and the elbow so that the saw thrown it away from him.

I know it sounds like a bizarre horror movie, his grand daughter find him ( she is 16) and a few minutes after it happened his wife returned home to learn about the disaster. As she was a special needs teacher before retiring she had enough training in first aid as well as common sense to kind of know what to do. It was a horrific sight, the way she described it.

Ambulance been called and he had to be air lifter to Royal North Shore where a leading specialist had to perform a 16 hour surgery and re-attach the chopped off left hand.
He is now, not quite a day after it happened is able to move 3 of the 5 fingers and providing there is no infection, can be looking forward to recovery.

Thanks to medical science and support system in place ..

The Circular saw accounts for a lot of missing hands and fingers. My son lost one of his fingers a number of years ago and it surprising how many guys you will see with the tops of a finger gone when you look.

Hope he makes a full recovery.

Glad he is fine , the wonders of technolgy.
Though spare a thought for the poor fella that lost his head roofing. They took him to Hospital and the Surgion at the time said I'm sorry but we cannot re attach his head because some idiot put it in a plastic bag and it suffocated

A mate in school was cutting a piece of timber held across his legs..........cutting with a circular saw..... should I go on
Or there was the school camp when a class mate tripped while carrying a machete by the blade

lol I hope he cuts the wood outwards

Since woodworking is a new hobby/learning of mine I did a google on "circular saw accident" and boy there are so many! Some things you just better learn from others (like don't oil the chain by running the motor!)

Apparently circular saw and table saw needs most precaution and causes accidents. I got a jigsaw and a router and they seem harmless (?)

No tool is 100% safe mate, guy at Alcan years ago stabbed his own eye out trying to remove Alum stuck in sawblade
One of the few accidents there I missed.
You could kill yourself with a toothpic in the right circumstances

Routers can be just as dangerous especially when bench mounted
If you need any tips try here http://www.woodworkforums.com/
There's plenty of jigs to buy and make that make jobs safer.
