Bligh govt scraps Qld fuel subsidy

The Queensland government will scrap the state's fuel subsidy next month.

Premier Anna Bligh announced in parliament today that the government will end the eight cents a litre subsidy on July 1.

"We currently spend more than $500 million a year in our fuel subsidy program," Ms Bligh said.
"But Queensland taxpayers and the motoring public are not getting value for money."

She said a recent independent inquiry identified Queenslanders were not receiving the full benefits of the scheme because
NSW motorists were crossing the border to take advantage of cheaper fuel.

Queensland puts assets worth $15b up for sale

The Queensland state government plans to sell $15 billion worth of assets from ports and coal terminals to motorways to reduce debt, it said on Tuesday.

Queensland, a major mining state, is the largest borrower among Australia's states and has been struggling to balance its budget after the global downturn hit demand for commodities and cut tax revenues.

Ratings agencies Standard & Poor's and Moody's this year have cut the state's top triple-A ratings to AA-plus and Aa1 respectively following the worsening of its finances.

The assets to be sold will include the Abbott Point Coal Terminal, Queensland Motorways Ltd, the port of Brisbane, Forest Plantations Queensland and Queensland Rail's coal haulage business, the government said in a statement.

The sales, which will take three to five years, will also allow the government to save a further $12 billion in required capital investment over the next five years, it said.

Bahhh. NSW and Vic subsidise them enough with our GST revenue. It's about time they paid for something......

70000 signatures in complaint on RACQ website in response to this.

There may be an 8c/litre subsidy, but most of the time there is only a couple of cents difference between Qld and NSW anyway. I don't think I have too much of an issue with the subsidy going (I might change my mind when it happens though...) as long as the gubberment puts the money they are "saving" too good use - roads, education, emergency services, etc.
