Hey guys,

Me and a mate where having a discussion about driving an auto car. Now he reckons that if u use the gears in an auto it will stuff the autobox, ie 1 and 2 and D it will stuff up the box, but then i thought well why would it.

Can aynone shed any light ?

I always use the auto shifter on my commodore.

Got over 280,000kms and still on the original box and going strong. As long as you don't do stupid things with it I don't see how it could be that bad.

Did it all the time in the VN V8.
Only thing that shagged it was going form D to R at speed

Sorry but i just dont get auto cars,if you really play with the gears and drive a car as it should be driven Buy a manual.Sure an auto is easy in traffic but a clutch is so much more fun especially if your driving a v8

Newer autos promtote the fact, where they have the + and - sports modes.

My old BA was driven like this continuously, it loved it,a s long as yoou get regular gearbox services and look after it!

If it was bad for it then they wouldn't give you the option would they.............

asssuming u dont abuse the system (and using is different to abusing) then i agree with everyone else!!!

using the t-bar on an auto wont hurt it. the reason for using it is to keep it in the power/torque zone for longer. an auto will usually change gears long before it gets anywhere near redline, so using the shifter allows you to keep it in gear. this is especially useful if you're towing a heavy load up big hills. i cant see that it would kill an auto box, unless he has been doing extended burnouts and holding it in gear for too long. it's the same as over revving a manual, it's not a good idea.

Example, all drag cars at a minimum have a shift kit that makes them shift alot harder (not taking into account the high stall) but the majority will run a "full manual" valve body that basically turns the auto it into a clutchless manual.

I don't mean to be fussy .... well, OK, maybe I do, ..... but isn't it "steering" in an auto, not "driving"?
