anyone know what the current rate is for guitar lessons these days?

last time i went it cost me about $15 for an hour but that was 15 years ago so im sure there has been a price rise since then.

ive been getting mixed answers from people ive asked around here ranging from $12 per half hour up to $30 per half hour.

reason i ask is that i am thinking of doing some teaching this year.
Ive started playing in a cover band and a few people have asked me about getting lessons but im not too sure yet...
If i do get into it then i dont want to overcharge people.

he wants to start teaching hoff

who are u going to be teaching, adults or teenagers or children??

i'd suggest that somewhere between 35-50 and hour would be reasonable... depending on who the person is and how much they want to learn...

just a thought as someone who took guitar lessons for about a year, then i gave up

I think the bloke on Ramsey st was charging over $50 an hour. :?

In saying that, he is in DFD and along with scales and chords, he shows you how to steal car stereos and break into houses...

When you visiting next, we need to catch up for a beer!

$50 an hour is about right. but it also depends on your knowledge and talent. Also i believe that no matter what your students experience is, it should be the same price for all.

About 18 months ago I decided that I wanted to learn to play guitar. Let's call it a "whim". :)

I borrowed my brothers electric, which he had given up on, and as the wife decided she didn't like the sound of me practicing, I played it without using the amp. I told her I wanted to buy an acoustic and she responded by telling me that I wasn't buying one only to have to sell it again in a month. So, I struck up a deal with her and she agreed that if I could fumble my way through 10 songs, she'd let me get one.

I thought about lessons but due to what I considered to be a ridiculous price and stale teaching techniques, I decided to teach myself.

I had already decided that I didn't want to learn scales and didn't have the patience to learn lead guitar, so set about learning chords. I figured the best way to do this was to start with the basic ones that I could half get my fingers around - A, E, D, G, C, Em, Am etc, and taught myself to play simple 3 chord soongs.

After I had ruined all of the classic, Knockin' on Heavens Door, Who'll Stop the Rain etc, the good wife allowed me to buy an acoustic. I grabbed a cheap arse Yamaha F310. It's been a fantastic guitar and my play list now extends past the 10 songs. Through a lot of patience and efforts I've even managed to get my fingers around barre chords.

The best thing of all, is that Casey loves it when I play nursery rhymes and Wiggles songs. This is the reason I started learning to play to start with. All I have to do now is stop the dog from howling when I sing.... err, attempt to sing.

The moral of the story is this;
If you are going to teach, find out what it is your students want to learn. I still have no desire to play scales, practice stupid finger exercies etc. All I wanted to be able to do was strum a few songs. Some people want to learn to play solos and lead guitar. Teach them what they want and they'll keep coming back.

There is a bloke on YouTube called Justin Sandercoe. He's a Tasmanian lad who now lives in the UK. Of all those offering free lessons on YouTube, I find his to be the most like the kind I'd like to get if I was paying someone:

justin sandercoe is ok, but if you have any sort of guitar nouse/experience, you will find him boring. reason is that he explains it fantastically if you are slow to learn or a complete beginner. he is very good however. just bored the sh!t outta me.

if you are a bit more advanced, or you wanna learn some stuff to show iff... look up kristofer dahl on you tube... a bit more advanced, but also very entertaining.
next step up is check out Paul Gilbert (formerly of Mr Big / Racer X) the guy is a virtuoso!! joe satriani has a few lessons on there as well...a really good one dealing with guitar modes.

i find you tube is great to teach you how to play songs, learn scales and some basic theory..all you need to ROCK ON!!!
go buy a book on teach yourself guitar, check out you tube and have fun..

Jason can hack out 10 odd songs (fairly bascially from what I can gather) on a bog standard acoustic guitar, that hardly makes him Mozart I reckon, not even Jimmy Page yet...

And as for policement beng so musical, you know 2 coppers that can pump a tune out.. dunno that makes par for the course (or the force..)

I'm sure without trying too hard we can find 2 plumbers that play musical instruments, even if one maybe the didgeridoo from the PVC tribe.. ditto chippies, sparkies etc etc..
