one for the computer geniuses out there

Hi all,

I'm using Vodafone Wireless for my internet connection - USB modem with sim card.

Nearly every evening I can be using the net with no problems then all of a sudden it's not receiving data. I open the Vodafone Mobile Connect software and it shows a speed for data going out but zero on data coming in. It will do this for several minutes - usually 5-6 but sometimes more. One way to get it receiving data again is to disconnect then reconnect. Royal PITA.

I'm wondering - is there any software out there that will monitor the incoming / outgoing traffic and produce a log file? I'm running WinXP Pro SP3 in a toshiba laptop.

Ideally I want to produce a logfile which shows when the data stops coming in and for how long it stops so I can take this to Vodafone and beat them over the head with it.

Ay suggestions appreciated.

Netlmiter 2 is a good monitor of in and out traffic but i'm not sure if it creates log files.

I use Microsoft Net Monitor (Gasp...yes they do make some good tools sometimes...)
follow these instructions on how to use it

and download it from here

It creates log files, create filters based on particular ports or traffic, shows destination IP and / or DNS name, select multiple networks and remote monitoring etc..

should be able to produce a log file for you so that you can show vodafone if it is their problem.

I don't think you'll get much of a sympathetic ear from Vodaphone.
Vodaphone uses the Optus network and they're both overloaded to the shithouse at the moment.

I'm with Optus wireless and yes it was shocking for the first couple of months, dropping out all the time butttttt.... it has been very good this last 4 to 6 weeks and I'm very impressed, good speed, reliable and at reasonable cost bundled with the landline, free local and national etc etc.

First time I've ever said anything good for Optus.

i know its a different carrier but im with unwired at home and once they actually told my machine to look for a particular station it started happening less... thing is i sorted all this out because they gave me a courtesy call a couple of months after i signed upto see if everything was ok....

Wayne, i'm with Virgin and have the same problems, the problem is Vodafone, Virgin and Optus all use the Optus infrastructure and they have sold the service to to many people and during peak time starting from after school week days till around 11.30pm there is no bandwidth left for people who just want to do routine stuff like read forums etc. The problems are well documented at Whirlpool Forums and even though your ISP is trying to resolve the issues so far they have not been able to address the congestion problems. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=18. Seems to be common across Australia.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions. Didn't know VF and Vigin resold Optus. Also didn't know there were so many unhappy users.

I've downloaded the Microsoft Net Monitor and tried it - very nice. Fancy good software coming from Microsoft :D
