well, have decided to go to tafe next year, and get qualified in something that hopfully I will be able to do when we make the move to the country a few years fro now. Have narrowed my choices to:

graphic design
animal studies
nutrition and dietetic support
fishing industry recreational services

does anyone out in kawasaki-land have any experience of any of these areas (except animal studies, got that covered) and can tell me how easy/hard employment is to get in these industries, esp in a rural area. ATM leaning towards nutrition, can always get a hospital job in the country.

cheers

As a qualified Graphic Designer all I can say is do not go there! The private colleges Tafes & Uni's spit out hundreds & hundreds of un experienced newly qualified GD's every year & can 1/2 of them get jobs? .... NO..... how about 1/4 of them......NO...... It would have to be one of the hardest fields to get into, unless of course you ooze tallent & happen sleep with the right people ;)

Mate have you thought about fitness instructor/ nutritionalist?

There are hundreds probably thousands of young people heading into this field, it is one of Australias boom employment and opportunity areas especially for the more 'mature' female. You see there is a huge portion of the overweight/ unfit public in the 35-50 age group screaming for a person with personality like yourself to assist in their lifestyle modification program. They really don't want the 'boot camps' or the 'no pain no gain' instruction, they are more into the understanding and gradual process, which in turn requires more sessions = $$$$.

You get to change your thinking and the thinking of others and give a lot to the community at the same time.

I have thought about this area for a few years now but have been to slack or too busy to commit, you know me, all the farkin ideas but never the time after working me ass of at work to implement them. I had a mate in the UK who weighed in at 125kg, decided to follow this route, 18 months later he was a lean 85kg working 30 hrs a week in his double garage conversion and clearing 50k GB a year. He still is going strong and loves what he does. Another mate trained as a PT instrustor in the army, came out after 10 years opened his own gym and ended up coming runner up in Pommy Gladiators!

You really will be in for a good long haul in anything you think of retraining in, this I would consider you would have your foot on a rung within 12 months. Be careful of the AIPT and such like, maybe TAFE or another institute??

The only thing I would say is watch out for them black eyes on the treadmill ;) :D ;)

See you at the club.

i did, but dont think someone with my particular disability would cope with the exercise part. Thats why I looked at the nutrition side of it, a crook back wont stop me from eating

Where are you working in the animal industry?

I did an Certificate 3 in Companion Animal Industry Practices many years ago which led me into my Veterinary Nursing Studies. After 6 years in a general practice I have just started work in Emergency and Critical care and have seriously considered at times going back and doing my BVSC. There are LOADS of jobs in the animal industry at the moment.

I'm not anymore.

Many years ago I worked part time as a vet nurse. I trained, conditioned and showed horses in hand and under saddle, strapped for showjumpers and taught beginners for 10 or so years. I showed cats for 15 years. I trained and handled dogs in obedience and agility for 20 years. I groomed dogs for 5 years. I keep fish and reptiles.

I just dont have the paperwork to prove it :? I know that tafe will credit me on life experience, but not keen on relearning stuff I know already. And a small disability tends to scare people off. I am well aware that animals are hard work, and can involves physical labour which I am ok with and cleared for, but other people think you're going to be on compo at the drop of a hat.

With the animal stuff was thinking along the lines of a pet shop. From experience I know that people selling animals in pet shops mostly have no idea what they're talking about.
