Mobile phones: recommendations?

Postby Colette » Sun Jul 27, 2008 6:03 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading my mobile; it's the second Sony Ericsson I've had and whilst they're great phones, I find they are prone to having software problems, so it's time for a change...

My first couple of mobiles were Nokias and they were ok, so I'm wondering if I should go back to Nokia (maybe the N95) or try another manufacturer?

Would appreciate recommendations :)

I just got the LG Viewty (KU990)
I was going to get the iphone, but I wasn't that keen on it once I had a good look at it, and feature wise it's just a product of marketing, the LG actually has better features standard.

N95 8GB is a great choice, but the only thing I have found with mine that erks me is there is no stopwatch :(
With the N95 Nokia has gone all out in features to try to blow away the competetion but that can only last a short time ;)
The new Iphone also seems ok, but I would wait a while till the cost comes down.

The iPhone 3g is severly lacking in features. Sure, it has a nice looking operating system, but that's not enough to save it from being a mediocre phone. It's list of downfalls includes:
2mp camera with no flash
No video recording
No stereo bluetooth
No MMS
No voice dialing
No flash support for internet browsing
Can't change battery
Cant transfer files to the phone - you need to email them to yourself
Currently, no voice based, turn by turn sat-nav
And from all accounts, quite poor call quality

I think the current pick of the bunch is the N95.

If you are prepared to wait a couple of months the HTC Touch Pro is shaping up to be a particuarly nice phone and if you wait another month or so, the Sony Xperia X1 looks to be even nicer. Some might turn their nose up at the HTC range, but they will actually be manufacturing the Sony X1 and rumour has it that Sony is looking to purchase the company.

Looks sweet Russ the technology is there but the Nokia has a 5 MPX camera with a carl zeiss lens & 8GB of internal storage
as compared to:
3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera for quality stills and video.
4GB of internal storage to preserve more photos, music, files and exchanged data than ever before.
Whats the damage on this one?

hi Colette

we at work have just replaced all the Nokias used by our sales guys...with Sony 's

The Nokias were a constant source of problems ...even though most were 9-18mths old
they had major problems..like battery deaths and minor stuff like display issues

The sales manager has had a Sony for several years now..no probs
so Sonys it is (its wasn't my decision in the end...the IT guys were involved)

btw
I have an old Sony K500..it works perfectly after 4 or 5 years

hth

Don't get me started on the list of problems with SE's over the last few years. I gave up buying SE's with their pus-box proprietary O/S's, crap quality keypads and woeful joysticks. It heartens me that HTC are going to be manufacturing their new flagship - the X1.

i got myself a HTC touch dual, i guess its not everybodys cup of tea in that the camera isn't as hot as some of the others and it has a little more to it than the 'dummy' interface... but if i want to take photos i use a real camera and i want my phone to be able to run programs not put out by nokia or apple  pocket pc has been around for years and the sky is the limit with programs available for it, adding a phone to it was just the next logical step. i had a O2 mini before this and it was shyte as a phone but the HTC does a great job of both phone and PPC, my only gripe is that your ear sometimes presses stuff on the screen and you end a call only to find out youve taken a couple of photos or opened a program or something

if your thinking the N95 for the GPS then my advice is forget that gimmick and just concentrate on the phone. i've got 4 family members with an N95 and all of them went and got a GPS after seeing how woefully the nokia performs...

so true... its one feature that lets it down, its good for in the street walking directions etc but in the car it is slow & not accurate.I bought a navman a few months after the phone as well

I agree totally!!! I had an 02 mini previously and now have a HTC Touch (Mine doesn't activate the screen with my ear while in call-whereas, the 02 did.) and just love the HTC. But it's a PDA phone and not everyone's cup of tea. I use the email functions while travelling and find it a top phone too. It survived a 100kph slide along a rock wall when I tipped the bike over earlier in the year, so it's tough as well!!!

I've had an N95 8GB for a year now - it's great for me.
Connects to work email via Mail for Exchange, WiFi's good at home, has a decent camera (for a phone), plenty of space for my music, and there's a good range of software (yes Rob, StopWatch included - check out http://mosh.nokia.com).

Only 2 downsides:
1. with the use I have I only get about 1.5 days out of the battery during the week. I normally stick it on the charger overnight, or plug it in at work if I forget.
2. The browser/WiFi configuration doesn't support NTLM authentication for proxies - so I can't really use the WiFi for anything practical at work, have to rely on Planet3.

I think it's one of the best phones around atm.

Thanks everyone, am leaning towards the N95 (or the 96 which is out soon I believe?).

Am not after a PDA but the info on the HTC is helpful. The iPhone was never a consideration.
