A girl who was mown down in a hit-and-run accident only to be scolded by the car's driver is fighting for her life in a New York hospital.

Nacirema Brown, nine, suffered massive head injuries when she was struck by the Nissan Maxima in Manhattan at the weekend, the New York Daily News reports.

The girl's grief-stricken mother, Dakemba Brown, arrived to hear from witnesses how the driver allegedly stopped to hurl abuse at her daughter rather than attend to her wounds.

"The man jumped out of the car and said, 'You stupid little bitch!' and drove off,” Ms Brown was quoted in the newspaper as saying.

The Nissan was found abandoned a short time later in a nearby neighbourhood. Police are still hunting for the driver.

Nacirema, whose name is "American" spelt backwards, was playing with her two cousins when she dashed off suddenly, her mother said.

It is believed she was running across the road when she was hit.

The girl was taken to the nearby Brookdale Hospital where she remained in a critical condition.

"The doctors are saying there's a 50 percent chance for my baby to live," Ms Brown said.

She described her daughter as a brilliant student who enjoyed singing with the local church choir.

arent all motorists supposed to be always aware of everything around them? and if they do hit something arent they meant to stop to see (and help if applicable) plus the kid was with the cousins so its not entirely mums fault.

the sad part is that if the girl did in fact run across the road, the driver wasnt speeding and just stopped at the scence then there would be no need to be running from the authorities it would be classed as a motor vehicle that was the pedestrians fault

You have got to be kidding. Even the best parent can not watch a child 24 hours a day. It is impossible. You obviously don't have children, or you are some kind of super hero.
