*SOLVED* Computer Problem Tech Question

Postby tape » Thu May 22, 2008 10:28 am

My computer when starting up makes sounds like it's a wannabe remote control aeroplane

Is it likely to be fan, power supply or hard drive?

Would appreciate helpful advice.

cheers

Just removed and cleaned fan and it seems more the power supply is the noise maker...

It's a Bliss Power Supply ATX-300, should I replace with same or is there a better alternative out there?

cheers

if its making noise there are 2 options.
1 take the fan out, clean it and lube it up. To do this you need to peel back the sticker from the middle of the fan and remove a rubber grommit. you put a small amount of sewing machine oil in there or similar.
replace the grommit and should be good as new.
Word of warning, not all fans have this grommit, some fans are made to not be serviceable, they just get thrown away when they get old.

Now if you cant be stuffed doing that, get a new one.

For the sake of $50, you can purchase a brand new one. Same brand and a bit of an upgrade to your 300w.

basically you shouldnt need any higher wattage PSU if you dont intend on putting more gear in your PC. but for $50 whos complaning?

Problem solved...

It was the power supply $35 for a 500 and it took ten minutes for me to change over the PS and she's as quiet as a church mouse.

Thanks for the advice.

Don't pay much attention to the wattage rating-look at how many amps are put out on the 12v rail if you have a modern system. If it's your average office/internet pc then what you bought will suffice, but with any modern gaming oriented pc then a garden variety PSU is not always the best option.
