What do you think of the DT200R?

Postby bonester » Mon Oct 29, 2007 10:35 pm

Looking at a rebuilt DT200R, 92 model, $1500. Sounds like top dollar to me, but a daggier and older one is on ebay at the mo, approaching that price. I rode one around town a few years ago and it seemed OK. I'm pretty crap in the dirt so I think it would suit. Opinions? ta :)
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

easy to ride, but maybe a bit gutless for you mate ? Physically a small bike as well, but easy to throw around. I rode one once way back in the mid-90's, it felt like a big XR80 to me !!

If you are just looking for something to practice dirt-riding on, it would be a good choice before you get that XR400..... ;)

A bloody awesome bush weapon mate!! Make sure you you derestrict it if it hasn't already been done. (a little rubber insert in the inlet man. and a rejet) They go like a cut cat then, are reliable and they steer mint. They will still be there at the end of the day with the rider looking a little more refreshed than the boys on there WR4fiddies and EXC's!!!! :D Blokes who know.... often hang onto them as a trailbike for that exact reason!!! ;)

Thanks guys. I'd like an XR400 too, but the budget didn't stretch that far.
I'm a pretty crap dirt rider so I mainly want to use this beasty to learn on and to lose some weight with too- bike will go better then! It pulls pretty well though. 100km/h no worries- even up the Toowoomba range- 10% grade. Guy who did the roadworthy said it was tuned really well. I rode a standard one a few years ago and I don't remember ot going as well.
This is the bike. Ended up getting it for $1400 with 8 months rego, service manuals, spare genuine header. It has has an aftermarket alloy muffler and the header has had the guts ripped out of it. (supposedly a hot up mod?) The rear shock was buggered- pity I didn't spot that one- but got one cheap at the local wreckers. Small town this one- I know the guy who sold it to me. When he spoke to me on the phone the price was $1500 firm, no rego. When I changed the shock I got rid of the pink spring and the new shock had a yellow spring. Pink disc protector on the front fell off too.

I can't remember if they were oil injected or not, but if so, disconnect the pump and run premix mate.Yamaha two stroker oil pumps have a high failure rate  I converted my TZR over for that reason. ;)

Yup they are injected. Mine supposedly has a new pump on it. What oil/fuel ratio would you run if y ou disconnected it? Ta :)

Depends on how and where you ride it. If you sepnd a lot of time at WFO, then 40:1 if you are puttin about at low revs 50:1 But use a top notch Caster or full synthetic oil. It's worth it's weight in gold. The last two smoker I had was a KDX200 that I ran 40:1 with a full synthetic (the motul is nice) and ran four seasons before it needed a set of rings and a hone. No rebore neccesary! ;)

20 or 25:1 was the old style ratio when the oil was a mineral oil like Castrol Super TT - remember that ? I used to run Castrol R30 in my little MX bikes (YZ80's), at about 30:1, it was a vegetable oil and smelled just like methanol when you were riding !!

The ratios that Marty is talking about are for fully-synthetic two-stroke oils, these are way better than the older mineral-based oils, and can safely run at 40 and 50:1 ratios........I remember back in the 80's, when Bel-Ray first released a synthetic 2-stroke oil, recommended at 50:1, we all laughed and swore never to use it......"how could that shit work at 50:1 ???..."

Rightstart had a few of these that we hired out. They were alright to putter around on but not real good at any half serious dirt riding. But then a decent rider will do pretty well on them. They sold them for about $500 - $700 each (albeit they were pretty old and knocked around) and not registered.

We used to run our two stroke dirties at about 40:1 with smaller jets and the needle dropped one ring (they're traditionally set up to run pretty rich) and they were always fine so long as the oil is a full synthetic. The serious guys run them at 50 or 60. Used to drop a new piston, rings and bearings in a couple of times a year when racing but they were always in good nick when you pulled them out.
