Tattoos and tanning

With the weather warming up (yay!) it got me thinking about the effects of lying in the sun when you have a tattoo.

As I only got mine a few months ago, I wondered does tanning affect the colouring of a tatt? I'd be interested in anyone's experiences with this.

Cheers :)

I was told when I got mine it would fade in the sun and to apply Factor 15+ to it. I haven't been strict with that and in 2 years it seems OK, but I'm not much a fan of tanning.

well... i never listened to any advice i got..

my oldest one is 10yrs old..it is faded from prolonged sun... being on my arm, and me never wearing sunscreen, it prob isnt as crisp as it could be...

also being on my arm, and me getting them when i was a weedy 12kg school kid, putting on a bit of size thru weight training/lazyness/drinking has caused em to stretch a little...

so..try to avoid burning crap out of em...and try to avoid gaining/losing weight where they are....

Yeah the sun does wreck the colours on them after awhile... So since Ive spent so much money on them, I try to remember to put the old sunscreen on the ones that see the sun the most... Also it would be a shame to have a big scar in or across one of them where the doc has to remove a sunspot/cancer from your body....

the sun saps pigments out of your skin, and therefore the more sun the tattoo gets, the faster it will fade. the old saying i was told is: if you wanna show off your tatts, do it at night!!

if you are going to be in the sun... apply factor 50 sunscreen: also known as a shirt!!!! ;)

seriously, get some really high factor 30+ or better (if it exists yet) and put it on.

Yes I was told the same thing as you Mike when I got mine and I did tan mine a few times since I got it 10 years ago Colette but not much loss of colour but as Neka said its not as crispy or as sharp as when you first get it and I also think you should take into consideration what type skin you have that mite make it fade quicka than others, well Im no pro but I thought Id try an help

I think you may have started somethin here

I always sunscreen mine if it is going to see the light of day (which isn't often.)

They look horrible after they have been faded by the sun.
