This one is prob for the nerds :)

Having just got a new notebook this week, I was wondering how many people here use them.

And how many people like me opted the the DR (Desktop Replacement) type notebook.
What are peoples notebook of choice? As well as brand of choice.

I was looking around for ages and decided that I'd stick with a Dell, problem being that the old Inspiron's had better screens than the new ones. ie. only 1280x880 res on new ones and my old one is 1680x1050. So I've ended up opting for a 17" monster. I weighed up the 9400 and compared with the M1710 there was only like $18 difference once you spec'd up the 9400.. So I went for the notebook with Rice... yes rice...

I have a Dell Centrino Duo. It is supplied by work. We used to have HP units and I would have to say there were far fewer problems with the HP's

Standard Dell's are balls!!

Notebooks need you to do a lot of research are have a good farsight.

Standard Desktops can be upgraded and interchanged very easily.
Laptops, apart from uping your ram can't (sometime you can't even upgrade ram)

Video cards are a very important factor also, so unless you spe'd up the standard shit house video card on the dell then your stuck with a shit house video card which will be out of date within a month.

I just bought a 17inch ACER which is awesome.

i paid 2k - $1900 after cashback offer, the same spec Dell is $2800..

ASUS and Toshiba are also very good.

end point.. unless you really need a lappy, still with a desktop.

Yeah I hear ya.

I ended up spending $2850, which is salary sacrifice so no big deal.

Spec M1710
17" Widescreen (1920x1200 tru life) awesome screen!
2.0ghz 4mb cache core 2 duo
256mb 700GS video card
2gb ram
160gb HDD
AGN wireless
gigabit ethernet
usual dvd-r dual layer
case
vista ultimate (But formatted it that night and put XP on it.)
printer (POS thing it is)

I wanted the 512mb video card (7950gtx i think) but couldn't go the extra $488 unfortunetly.. I didn't expect the boss to come to the party on this one so I'm not complaining.

I got an ACER back in 2000 when I was at Uni. It was to be used along side the desktop, not a replacement, but I still went for high specs (for the time). 1.7GHz P4, 256Mb ram, 20Gb HD and CD burner. This thing is now 7 years old and runs Photoshop 7 just fine. It's only issue in 7 years is the battery which is in need of replacement. Sure is only has a 14" screen but the ram is upgradeable and it's not far behind new cheap versions.

We bought one of the Aldi notebooks - no real problems so far. Had to get the Mrs a computer, so we thought it may as well be portable...
