FIRE is reported to be spreading inside Melbourne's Burnley tunnel after a four-vehicle collision this morning.
The tunnel is being evacuated and there are no reports of injuries yet.
The fire is understood to be in one of the tunnel substations.
Between 10 and 12 fire trucks are at the scene.

Sorry to hear of the deaths, I friggin hate that tunnel, particulalry on a bike, can't breathe... suggested once to Citylink the emissions in the tunnel are disgusting and they come back wth EPA readings a the top of the smoke stack... and advise me they are WELL below the standard...
Gonna do wonders for traffic flow in Melb too.

Mick,
levels are down at the smoke stacks because they dont turn on the extraction fans ........ they just it flow out the end of the tunnel cause there are no sensors there
yes bad to see there were deaths though

the time we saw the smoke and the time the first fire truck we saw coming out from the flinder st was like 20 mins or something and it had a hard time getting to the tunnel thru all the busy traffic at that time of the day
and before this happened everyone thought the red tower is an apartment building

You might be right Nikos but I doubt it frankly... given that people are paying to use said tunnel I reckon of they drop the speed limit they'll go away in droves, Princes Hwy after all is either 70 or 80 and is the alternative route that everyone is using currently anyway...
Personally speaking, could care less, never done the tunnel in my own car and be very rare occassion I wanna do it on the bike again, can't hold my breath long enough.
