I never used a book - though there are many out there. I can't really tell you which might be good or only average.

UNIX for Dummies
Both of them might be a good place to start.

Starting with UNIX (PJ BROWN Micro Computer books)

and UNIX made Easy (Mcgraw Hill books)

The standard educational Uni texts for Unix are typically ....

"Unix Sytem V Bible" by Stephen Prata and Donald MArtin ISBN 0-672-22562-X
and
"A Practical Guide to Unix System V" by Mark G. Sobell ISBN 0-8053-8915-6

PLENTY of others that I have come across over the years though...

As for Linux not too sure, have bought a couple of Red Hat texts but pretty much just for command reference. Most of Linux is just like Unix, so never bought a tutorial.

GNU and similar licenses aren't the be all and end all though, they are an absolute pain to develop on sometimes ...

beginning unix looks alright, not looked at it though.

Teach yourself unix is a good start, looked at their book series previously and they seemed to cover the bases well enough.

Introduction to unix & linux by McGraw's Hill, good book, had a flick through it.

Unix System Administration Handbook (3rd ed) THIS is a great book, have it at home, worth paying the $104 for it, if i lost mine i'd happily fork out for another copy. Had a sysadmin i was working with in 2001 recommend it to me as he had the 2nd edition of it and i used it for ages before i bought my own copy of the 3rd edition.

Unix Bible (2nd ed) also got this at home, it's good, but not as good as a the s-a-h

UNIX Shells by Example (3rd ed) Got this at home too, its good for learning shell scripting once you've started to get the hang of working your way around a unix/linux system.

You know some TAFE course are quite cheap (as opposed to $100 textbooks) as well and provide a decent enough knowledge base that anything else you need to learn about Linux/UNIX can be researched on the internet while you are using it rather easily
