Whats a guitar Lesson worth???

ha ha yeah - maybe i could buy the zed back and pay you with lessons

na i moved up here for a better lifestyle etc but the job i got turned out to be a nightmare. i quit that and am currently unemployed whilst i wait for uni to start in feb. at the end of the year apparantly i will be a qualified teacher so at the least i could possibly pick up some casual teaching at the local schools till something permanent comes up.

while doing uni this year i need to make some cash to pay rent etc but i really gotta get into a bike again soon or i am going to go postal.
ive nearly been given the green light on buying an older ie cheaper bike to commute on to uni. i just needed to put the right twist on it

The big thing ive learnt this past year is DONT ever sell your current bike until the replacement bike is parked in the garage - you will never be allowed to get a new one.

If you are going to teach, find out what it is your students want to learn. I still have no desire to play scales, practice stupid finger exercies etc. All I wanted to be able to do was strum a few songs. Some people want to learn to play solos and lead guitar. Teach them what they want and they'll keep coming back.

There is a bloke on YouTube called Justin Sandercoe. He's a Tasmanian lad who now lives in the UK. Of all those offering free lessons on YouTube, I find his to be the most like the kind I'd like to get if I was paying someone:

i totally agree with you on only teaching what the student wants to learn.
When i first started guitar i remember that i used to get the sh!ts having to learn stuff i didnt really want to ever play.

ive been speaking to the local guitar teacher up here and he tells me that most kids he teach just want to learn the current popular tunes. i wont have any problems doing that but i hope i can show them some other stuff that they might be interested in. ie give them what they want to learn but try mould them a little as well. it would be nice to build a little army of shredders

I've taught approx 40 student/week in a music school for 7 or so years in Sydney, and privately sometimes, mostly mates.

When I started the price was $20/half hour, now it's $27.50/half hour, and that's regarded as a reasonable (still on the cheap side) music school price. Wouldn't be suprised if it went up again soon. Depends if they book for how many lessons.. whole term sometimes.

Privately, that's up to you. I'd call your local music store(s), then charge a bit less to be competitive, as you don't have their overheads and teachers to pay etc.

If you're teaching kids, make good relationships with the parents.

If you're teaching "intermediate to advanced guitar" exclusively you can charge more "professional rates"

If you're teaching adults you don't have to worry about "school term", but you'll have to be vigilant, and let people know in advance what happens to their money if they don't turn up, musicians are generally "fashionably/terminally late" which is hell if you don't manage it well, and mothers need predictability.

Make-up lesson policy is important, make it clear with students before they start.

I've seen some people only allow whole/half term bookings for kids (10/5 weeks), makes the admin a lot easier, and a discount encourages this.

Give 'em some of WHAT THEY WANT (ask em) AND WHAT THEY NEED (show em why) in every lesson, make sure they understand, and have fun, and they'll keep coming back.
