Buying a tent.....

Postby Neka79 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 7:49 pm

ok..so maybe this could go in the "off topic" section??

or maybe the "ride days & get togethers" ??

as sum of us ride to the GP and SBK and various other meets, camping is often the preffered method of acommodation..so i needs a tent!!

but which tent to buy?? Do i go into Kmart?? a camping store?? Ebay??

what kinds of things do i want?? i want it to be durable-ish (not disposable)...i want it to be relatively light & small to go on the back of the bike... but what else does it need?? will it handle winter??

so do i go buy a $50 dome special from kmart?

do i drop $500+ on sumthing ..

do i go for sumthing like this ... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/OZTRAIL-3V-Dome- ... dZViewItem

or is this a good idea ... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2006-Model-Black ... dZViewItem

or how bout this one ?? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-3-person-cam ... dZViewItem

if any of u (i kno a few of u are keen campers) have ideas or suggestions id like to hear them...

do u really get what u pay for?? and if so..what??

go to a camping store, buy on weight and the people you want in the tent...

going to kmart you get a cheaper price, but also more generic tents.

going to a camping store you get excact measurements for the weight and size of the tent packed up *good if your on a bike*

edit" and for the winter thing, you shouldnt worry, its what you wear or sleep in, that will protect you, and as for price, good average 3 person tent shouldnt set you back more than 300 dollars... unless you want somthing blinging and crazy.

edit 2: just saw your links, that oz trail tent looks good, but may be bulky even though light... the last one will be cheap as crap in manufacturing wise, and the second one is only a 1 person tent, but ideal.

We have the first one...it is too small for any length of time, but one person for a weekend may be ok. We also bought a lightweight hiking tent to put on the back of the bikes...haven't used it yet, but it is actually about the same size internally as the first one, just a different shape and it doesn't have an annex bit. But it weighs in under 2kg...was $165 I think...

Small tents can be quite warm - not much area to heat, but mostly that is determined by your sleeping bag - we bought DMH ultralights at $95 a throw, in a matching, zip together pair. They weigh in at .98kg and can fit easily in a gearsack etc.

Good stuff doesn't cost quite as much as it used to but go to a camping store and have a chat.

BTW, the outlaws own a camping shop, but we bought the last lot of gear from Camping World as we wanted it for a spur of the moment trip.

buy the cheapest one you can if you are taking it to motoGP this year.

Im staying in trackside again but this time we are taking more fireworks and flares. and we are declaring war on highside. ;)

last year we had a couple flares bounce off tents nearby. just lucky they didnt burn. i wouldnt take anything to GP (except your bike) that you werent willing to throw out after.

If you want to go camping a lot, spend the extra dollars on a good quality lightweight 3-man dome tent. This will be money well spent on something you will use regularly, so don't skimp on quality.

But if you only want this tent for a couple of times per year (GP and/or Supers), then grab the cheapest 2-man tent you can find in K-Mart. Even if you only use it 10 times, if it cost you just $50, then you have only spent $5 per night on accomodation costs..........

Duane bought a kmart/big w one, and it got torn to shreds at the GP.

I'd go to a camping place.. We went to the camping and 4wd expo and picked up a nice tent (my medium sized one) for like $150-200 or something.

I would suggest that camping at the GP means you are in quite adverse conditions so you want to make sure you get a suitable tent that will last.

Also get something that is a good size. I dunno if you want something small, or if you want something abit bigger than the my one you've been using.

The Taj Mahal is Oz-trail and it withstood some mighty strong wind (Both from mother nature and from Gos' arse  ) and sideways rain for three nights and days no problem, as well as taking a bashing from my kids for a while now too. So I can reccommend those for sure! :)

Yeah, spend the extra and get one with the rip-stop material. And always take some 100 mile an hour tape for running repairs...according to my brother this generally outlives the rest of the tent...:)

Neka,

best to go to a camping place. spend the money on a quality product that wont fall to bits in a hurry, and you could use it at least twice a year (i.e supers & GP). as for size, think about how many people you are willing to sleep with (settle down!!!) and be honest about it, then bump up your tent size by 1-2 persons. i have a 4-5 man tent that we often use just for 2 people, it allows that extra space & they aren't heavy really (dome tents).

and they are idiot proof. really easy to use

i went by myself on the bike and bought a 2 person bushmans tent with me, was 45cm long and 8cm in diameter/1.5-2 kilo max. was enough for me and all my shit.though you'd want one a big bigger and with a built in annex though as mine was the smallest i could find.

got it from kmart b.t.w.
