Question For You All

Postby ant » Thu Aug 10, 2006 12:01 am

Situation is this.

Background: My brother and I purchased a house not long ago together. Agreement was that he'd live in it till January, tilll he goes overseas, and then I move in which is all going to plan.

The missus and I are moving in there in January. I'm currently paying Mortgage/Rates/Ins on my portion of the house.

What can I expect/request that she pays?, as when we move in it means she'd be paying no rent etc.

I'm after peoples opinions or if they've been in a similar situation - basically, i don't want to be paying for EVERYTHING yet. If we were married, had a kid etc, that'd be different.

id figure out how much her income is and then scale things so it was proportionate. I'd suggest you sit down and discuss it with her rather than say "right, you'se gonna give me $lots per week", might mean you sleep on the couch for a while if you dont

well since its ur house, and not hers..and shes not paying the mortgage...best thing u can do is a rental agreement...
like say "ok ur paying $50 rent a week"

if u let her think shes paying $50 off the mortgage, shes gunna think she co-owns..which could be a problem if things ever go pear-shaped...

me & my gf rent...so we have a system...
half the rent each
half of every bill
i give her $50 a week for food (if she goes over that it comes out of her pocket- so its ussually abt $100 a week neway)
i pay for fuel in car (she rarely drives it)
i pay all rego/insurance costs on car ,bike & contents
i pay internet.
i get sex pretty often

so it all works out in the end....until shes mega rich & buys me the zx10r she is promising...

Yeh, i don't want rent or anything like that as I'm already paying the mortgage, and that way it's still mine.

I was thinking of making her pay half the contents ins (as theres heaps of her crap), and the net and phone bill.

Then halves on everything else.

A grand total of about 130$ a month.

In comparison to the about 1200ish im paying now and I dont live there yet.

If u guys are together she should b understanding that u can't pay for 100% of everything, so one way u might avoid having to say its anything for the house, just tell her u think its fair if she just gives u $xx amount each week which will just cover general living expensence! that way u avoid giving her the impression u r her land lord or she is part owner of property, but rather make her think she is contributing to your general living :)

see how that goes!

If you live together for 6 months is she entitled to take you for half in case you break up etc?

If that is the case, i would charge her rent.
That way she can't say she was helping to pay off the house.
And get it in writting.

Hi there, I'm a little more experienced in fucking relationships up than most  So I certainly know what NOT to do

If you are even having these thoughts, might I suggest you not ask her to move in. Once she moves in, and starts contributing to the running costs of the house in any way, she will essentially within the appropriate state Govt legislation, be entitled to a proportion of the estate. Tread carefully there.

If you are in love with her, trust her, and want to be with her for the rest of your life and deep down know she feels the same way.....go for it! Otherwise, consider it very very carefully!!!

If you are in love with her, trust her and want to be with her for the rest of your life, then how could you even have the audacity to ask her for money, you tight wad!!!!!

In my experience it's at times like this that you need to think with your head and not your heart, unfortunately.
Not to sound like a pessimist, but it is important to safeguard your assets that you have worked hard for.

My suggestion is to ask her to pay rent, as that is simple, uncomplicated and that way she knows how much to pay each week/fortnight.

Should things seem more permanent down the track, you can always put the house in both your names; as they say, prevention is always better than a cure.

Good luck, Ant :)

sure, ask her to pay, but make it sound more like "board" instead of "rent".....

that way you also retain control of the domicile, and dont neccessarily have to declare the "board" as income...

I can't be bothered finding who said what.

But I'm more than happily engaged, and it's not that I don't WANT to pay for everything.

Yes I'll be with her a long time yet.

You can't fight it man, if you do stay together forever, you will be dead first, she wins anyway, if she lives with you for six months that's it I'm afraid, she has half of your half, believe me I know....next time I am just going to find a strange women in the street that hates me and just give her the house, It is cheaper.
