Digital TV signals .... info needed...

Postby Neka79 » Sun Sep 16, 2007 11:42 pm

Ok so i got the HD digital tv and tuner a few months back..worked an effing treat, never seen such brilliant tv in my life...

so last week we move... and all i can pick up is shitty old analogue signal (im 500m away, in a 2 storey place now)... when the digital channels (9 and 7 only- 10 is a charm) are on, they break up so much u cant watch a show- kinda like how mobiles use to break up as u go thru a tunnell...

so is the digital signal sent from the same place as the old signal?? why is it i can watch channell 7/9 on the old signal, reasonably ok, but the digital signal is so crap?? it also wont pick up SBS digital (i dont need the nudie movies- ive got the net..but i miss speedweek and southpark!!)

ive already ripped the aerial lead out of the wall and replaced the end as the old one was stuffed... and i dunno where the aerial itself is, but thought id ask if ne1 knows abt it before i go climbing on the roof!!

Cheers...

If you own the place, pay an antenna guy to come out and set it up properly, we got one up in bris, and they were cheap as chips really, and they got us excellent reception. They replaced our antenna and put it where it is most efficient. If you rent, personally i would bite the bullet and get it done anyway, bad reception would drive me mental.

I pissfarted around with mine for a while when I first got it trying to get good signal. It was OK most of the time but some channels would cut out because they are very sensitive to crappy reception from the wrong aerials and cables, particularly the HD channels. In the end I bit the bullet and got a new aerial with new quad shielded cable and it's always good now.
Like Matt said, You'll need to talk to a digital TV aerial mob to make sure you get the right aerial for your area.

The biggest problem is that an analog signal and a digital signal can come from different directions, so your antenna might be pointed in a direction that will pick up a good analog signal but might not have a digital transmitter located in that line......as above.....you need a PRO.....and also someone to look at your antenna

agree...
after putting with shitty reception when we moved into our place, I got a professional to do it
result? brilliant analogue and digital reception (even with a el cheapo set top box)

im lucky, my units are set up to point to an transmitter with analog and digital transmission, so im getting sweet reception on both of them. Mind you if there was a reception problem i'd have to take it up with strata, which would be a pain in the arse :-\.

I moved recently. Had perfect reception at the place I left now I have shite reception. Had someone have a look & he said fabulous arial but whatever is in the ceiling has been disconnected for normal (old style TV) & set up for high definition plasma fancy rah rah TV. Only picking up 3 stations - channel 31 & 2 other fuzzy stations. Cant even get channel 2.
It's a good thing I'm moving again soon.

You might be able to get a bit of advice at the Digital Broadcasters Australia forums....I think it's http://www.dtvforum.info/. They've got a lot of info on aerials and reception in different areas. If you are stuck with an internal aerial there is a digital one from Dick Smith that isn't too bad, I'm using one for my digital tuner in the computer but it's sitting up in the roof with a lead running down. I've also got one for my daughter's tv in her room. They still don't beat a properly installed aerial though.
