Mate that blows...
My bad year was 2007, no doubt most people on here back then would have heard about it.
From personal experience I have found (and this may seem trite) that when you have hit rock-bottom the only way is up. In my case my wife of 20 years (minus a few months) moved out with her new girlfriend and left me with the kids
and the mortgage minus one salary. I had to remortgage the house and struggled to pay the bills.
Since then I have met my new partner, she has moved in and I'm happier than I have been for a long long time. I also changed jobs internally and had a half-decent payrise. Swings and roundabouts mate, swings and roundabouts.
...in other news my Ex threw away a relationship that lasted 22 years for a fling that last less than six months. She had the balls to ask me if I'd take her back if my new partner wasn't around. I declined her kind offer...nicely. I don't hate her and we still get along most of the time, but the last time was the second indisgression and there's only so much heartache and pain a person can take without leaving themselves unable to trust anyone again. She's since found someone else and is also very happy so I'm guessing the swings and roundabouts applies to everyone, even those that appear at first glance not to deserve it

.
Sounds like you've had it tough, but at least you're hanging in there. Keep your chin up.
