the heat n dead possums

Sat Jan 31, 2009 7:58 am

i went to cape shank to watch the sunset on thursday evening. Walking along the track fm the car park, i counted 30 plus dead ringtail possums which had succomb to the heat. There were also loads of others wandering around in a daze. So stuffed fm the heat that they couldnt muster the strength to either run away, or attempt to bite me. I gave the ones i could some water, but i fear yesterday would have finished them off. I found it a little upsetting to find so many in distress. No pics as it was dark. Just shows how hot it is in vic atm.

I had no power last night from 6:30pm until about 10:45pm. It was 38 when the power went out, didn't drop much when it got dark, but we did get a faint coolish breeze around 10pm. It made dinner a bit late, all we had to eat was in the freezer. Couldn't get takeaway, nor visit the supermarket everywhere was out

All ok today. 40 already, expecting another day in the mid-40s (it's been 44.9, 44.4, 45.1 and 45.2). Had a couple of days last week doing first-aid supporting the CFA with their bushfire just out of Woodend.

The grass has all died, had to have water delivered. One of the chooks has disappeared, I'm guessing an eagle or a fox.

Late Edit> Nope, it was the heat, found it dead in the garden this morning...and the temperature has dropped to 33!

Yep, the CFA are great, great bunch of guys and girls.

Alas I'm actually not in the CFA, I'm in the Woodend Division of St Johns . A lot of the CFA guys are first-aid qualified, but they're all too busy in a fire situation actually fighting the fire, hence they call on us.

I'll tell who else are great, the Salvos and their Emergency Catering Team, now THOSE guys are good, they kept the food coming to a large group of 150+ CFA firefighters, some guys from the DSE (and a couple of St John's first aiders) for approx 48 hours around the clock.

We've had a major change come through, no rain but a 180 degree wind shift and it's now 21 DEGREES!!! We've opened all the windows and doors and are letting the breeze move the heat out :kuda:
