what to do in LA for 1 night

Im off to USA next week.
i will be staying in LA thursday night then flying to colorado the friday morning.
ive been there before so ive done the footpath with the stars in it and a little of that touristy stuff.

i was hoping to check out something interesting like a band or something. It seems the popular places (troubador, hard rock etc) dont have anything interesting on.

im staying near LAX but was planning to catch a taxi into town after doing some shopping at the mall with the GF.

anyone here got any tips for a good pub or something else interesting? between the airport and the city?
is there an area that is fun just to go hang out an walk around? i was thinking venice beach but its winter there maybe no one hangs out in the cold.

the following weekend (8 feb) we are in vegas. i know exactly what to do there... drink booze gamble pass out and repeat

Santa Monica Peir might be alright at night, but day would be a bit better for that.

If your going to be anywhere near Beverly Hills theres a few things you may want to check out, the star walk, the chinese theatre, its rather nice at night around there. Also consider going for a walk down Rodeo Drive, nice area, we even felt quite safe walking around all there at about 10-11 at night or so.

Then theres The comedy Store Good entertainment, though watch for the cover charge AND the two drink minimum . I cant remember what it's called, but theres a few good clubs, namely the vine street lounge. Theres some other places around there that kicked some serious arse, but i cant really remember them right at the moment :-\.

ill throw some photos up now with comments on where they were, to give you an idea.
