If you are help me with my choice for a cheapish bash around kit, not for racing.

- Traxxas bandit with 15t ESC and 17t modified racing motor from venom

- Traxxas rustler with the same... but only one 3000mAh battery, the bandit is cheap enough that i can afford 2.



oh and tell us whats in your garage

most of mine are dead though - Traxxas nitro sport, died in a fire when the fuel tank cracked open , Team Associated touring car with a few hop ups that was mega expensive, saved for 2 years as a kid to get that, and it died on the track hitting a wall at about 75km/h

My main toy is an airboat with an OS .46. I think I've posted piccies before.

I'm currently designing a 40" hull - haven't decided whether to use a pair of ducted fans or a nice big inboard.

o.o airboats are insane...


id say go with the ducted fan, but they have alot of fiddly crap with balancing and stuff.

well dave if you have some inside information im in need of one or two 3000 or so mAh 7.2 volt 6 cells (7 cells are fine too, but im not that rich, or have a charger for them)

I'm thinking fans would be easier and cheaper than an inboard, actually.

I've a 2" scar on my thumb to prove it.

My little brother kindly accelerated just as I was catching - wet hull, wet hands, one thumb into rapidly spinning prop. Lucky it was only a .46, and not a new (sharp) prop.

wouldnt an inboard kinda defeat the purpose of an "air" boat? or am i missing somthing? i dunno, im not that knowledgeful in boats.

I haven't decided whether it will have air props (fans) or a water prop (inboard). The hull would take either with a little modification.

Pros and cons:

Ducted fan:
- Quiet
- Decent speed for money outlay
- Battery capacity limits run time
- Easy and quick set up. No mucking around with starting nitro engines, fuel mess etc.
- Batteries can be used as ballast

Inboard (nitro)
- LOUD (not sure whether that's good or bad
- Awesome speed, but have to pay for it
- Only battery needs are for the receiver. Filling a fuel tank's quicker than charging a battery
- Technically more interesting
- Would be less stable than ideal, as the hull's quite shallow.
- Would probably survive a dunking. Fans may not.

just also remember nitro = dirty, smelly, oiley and a BITCH to maintain

also remember with d-f that it will be more efficient to run a prop with a larger diameter, less blades and less angle of attack (7-14krpm) than it will be to run a ducted fan (14-24krpm) as your shifting a lot of air over a lower velocity (more efficient for steering with the rudder as well as air displacement)

Only got the Nitro car that i've made a couple of minor attempts to sell. lol.. very minor attempts...

Tamiya 1/10th scale TA-03 4WD chassis.
Associated 1/10th scale B3 2WD Buggy (98% finished).
Tekin Speed Controller.
JR FM Radio (unused atm, awaiting buggy).
16-T Fantom motor.
27-T Stock rebuildable motor.

Mike, a water prop would be far more efficient than any air prop, standard or fan. That's one of the reasons the nitro inboard would be much quicker, and why I'd run a pair of fans rather than a single. There are a couple of advantages relating to drag and thrust point with fans as opposed to regular props, too.

Air rudders don't offer enough control for me without being rather unsightly. Water rudders don't muck up the lines of the boat, and give excellent control.
