hi all,

just came across this 99 model suzuki gsxr 600 at a price that i could afford!!!! now i know this is a kawasaki forum, however, due to any 2003 + zx-6r priced at $9.5k+, there's no way that i could afford smoething at the moment or even in this year, so my question is

how good are these gsxr600 99 model???? style wise i still prefer the kawa but money is the biggest issue, performance wise in the spec they look pretty good, what about their life range? high maintainence cost? or better wait?????????

so i need some good or any opinion about this bike, i'm upgrading from a zx2r

So why not get a pre-2003 ZX6, then?

Good enough. The chassis is pure racebike (once you get over the bulbous tank), let down a bit by a none-too-grunty motor, cut-price rear shock and bodgy finish in places (headlight attaches to the top fairing by self-tapping screws, for example).

The 99 GSX-R600 I had for a while was an ex-TAAFS racebike, with all the good stuff on it and the motor tuned to fatten up the midrange. That thing rocked harder than Iron Maiden in the early 80's, with the motor and suspension action able to match the chassis. On the stock bike, the motor's rowdy and exciting, but was pretty much the weakest in the class when it was new.

The first-generation (L/M-model) R6 and the J-model ZX6 are both better bikes in almost every regard.

Pretty good bike.... they are the last of that particular shape/model.... Earlier models had some trouble with the carbies when you pull wheelies apparently (I wouldnt know)...

I like them.... I think the 99 ZX6R is a better bike though.... and if you shop for a few weeks you should find one for the same price...

I mean yeah i could get a pre-2003 zx6r but just couldn't look at the tail, it's just flat, unlike other bikes in the class they all got pointy and high tails, which looks awesome, but for 4k more, what should i do, the Gixxer now is about $6.5k with 32k on the clock

if i had to get a kawa i could afford at the moment i would get the zx7R instead

That just means that not only do you get a new bike, you get to ride the full length of the GOR bringing it home...

At 6 grand flat, that thing's the bargain of the year, and the year before that.

Mate the SA boys would be happy to go up and check it out for you and it wouldn't hurt that 2 of the members could turn up on near identical bikes.

The Spewzi's had a pretty well earned reputation as being fairly weak engine wise, and pretty high maintenance as well, especially as Stereo said around the carbs, cetainly the guys I know had more troubles than the same year Yama hahaha or Big K

of course, for a '99 model the ho, hon, non thingy isn't too bad. I've had this 20 months, done 40,000+k and it's still going strong

When your sitting on the bike your not going to see the tail, nor will you be concerned about it when you need to get a service, etc, etc. If the "look" of the tail is all that is putting you off a bike you probably need to sit down and do a list of the things you want and see what bike measures up. For me a kawasaki was the only bike that fitted my criteria and if another brand is the only one for you then buy that one.

That's true. But when you sit on the gixxer, you get to look down and see the shoddy way the front end is held together.

is the gixxer600 that bad?

as i'm completely new to bikes, i can't tell which one handles better and which one machinacally is better than the other.
