How to show my noobieness...if that is indeed a word...

Postby wazza1234 » Mon Jan 23, 2006 6:07 pm

Easy question. How do I push start a bike? Cant be that hard can it?

Also, how easily should a gpx250 battery go flat? Mine lasts 2 starts, if it stalls on those 2 starts I cannot start it again (the starts are like 2 seconds, not 5-10 secs). Also, I have a little miss. I havent noticed it when idling but only when accelerating. Happened on the way to work this morning town riding and then on the way hoe at 130km/h....scared the shit outta me. Suggestions?

Put the bike in second gear, pull the clutch in, run down the road next to the bike, jump onto the seat and dump the clutch with a little twist of the throttle. I used to own a Z250 and did that every time I had to start it because I was too much of a cheapskate to buy a new battery.

Sounds to me like your battery is shagged, which could also explain your "miss".

Go and buy a new one.

Sounds like ur battery may need replacing, which could also have something to do with causing the miss. low power in battery gives low spark.

And to push start a bike, i would suggest 2nd gear, down a hill, ignition on, roll, let put clutch, and it should start

Put it in second and pull the clutch in. Get someone to push you. Stand up on the pegs. Drop down onto the seat suddenly at the same time as you drop the clutch. Easy ;)

Sounds liek you have other problems that need fixing first...

Rock the bike back and forth a little while trying to select second, you should be able to get it.

Most bikes are tricky to get second when they're not running.

even with the positive neutral finder????

Also, how long should the battery last for example if it was turning over the starter for an extended period of time?

The positive neutral finder works on the dentrefugal principle. if the output gear isnt rotating beyond a certain speed, then there are little locking ball bearings that stop it from going from neutral to second. So either get the bike rolling in neutral or get someone to give you a shove until your doing 10-15km/h, then upshift to second (third is also good) and drop on your arse as you let out the clutch. Dropping on your arse in the seat forced the rear wheel to load up against the road & increase traction.

Lastly, if its being contankerous whatever you do, dont take the clutch in for a second or three after its fired up at the least as the engine will be a bit unstable and might stall out on you.

If the battery was in good nick, anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.

1:tie a rope around head stem
2:tie a rope around towbar, alternatively tie other end of first rope to tow bar and go to point 4
3:tie ropes together
4: drag bike to dealership
5: purchase new bike
6: untie trade in bike
7: Call NRMA ask for tow truck for car
8: Ride bike home

or
1: buy new battery
