Help! Removing rubber grommet from bar end weight ZX9-r

Postby rexxxy » Sun Aug 28, 2005 11:54 am

As topic states,

I have scratched the bar end weight on my '02 ZX9r and have bought a new one from Kawasaki. Unfortunately the new bar end weight did not come with a new rubber grommet. I am now trying to remove the grommet from my old end weight and im having nothing but trouble.

I have removed the circlip which seems to serve the purpose of holding the grommet in place, im attempting brute force to remove the grommet (hammer and a piece of steel tube on the opposite side), but the damn thing wont budge.

Is there a trick to this?

Ofcourse had I known that this was going to happen, I would have just bought a new grommet!

I would rather not make another trip to Brighton Kawasaki for a .50 cent grommet costing $38.97* (*extreme guestimation, but probably correct).
So if anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.

Clark rubber has grommets from 50c - 90c or thereabouts.

You need to prise it off carefully. Use some soapy water and try to get the soapy water between the grommet and the material, otherwise everytime you hit the grommet with the tube it will just get momentarily tighter and wont budge. I guess you are finding that out already...

Ended up getting it off by prying it with a jewlers screw driver and some WD40 and some swearing. The end product was a pretty ratty looking grommet which I wouldnt trust. So I will have to go down to Kawasaki and buy a new one.

I guess you cant expect the guys over the counter to know everything, but it would be a common item to replace on a bike, I would be a whole lot happier if they told me at the time that I would need it.

Anyway, having to go to the shop gives me a chance to perve on zx10r's!

Mate i had the same issue! with my ZX6R! wait till you get the new one and try and get the damn thing in the end weight!

I suggest, lining it up with right size socket in a vice and then just wind it in! The other way is use the that will just fit in the end of the weight and use a hammer, but I found the vice way was easier!
