The First Bike I Ever Bought...........and Why ?

Postby Gosling1 » Wed Aug 03, 2005 7:22 pm

Blow those cobwebs out of the remote corners of your minds, and start thinking..........why did I buy that shitheap as my first ever bike ???......

DATE- sometime during 1978 ?

BIKE- 1971 CB 125 T Honda ( 1st and last )

DESCRIPTION - shitbox twin, 5-speed, my treadlie was quicker  but this was my learner bike. Rode to school during last 2 years.

MEMORABLE MOMENT- Doing my first ever burnout in the remains of a dog that had been run over. It was still <24 hour carcass, plenty slippery, backed the little H and dumped the clutch as only a 16 yo can !!! I still get bagged about this to this day !

HOW MUCH COSTY ?- about $300 bucks from memory.

WHY DID I BUY IT ?? - Needed a motorcycle to get to school, (sick of catching the bus), mate had a Honda 125 single, seemed like a good idea at the time. :?

HOW LONG DID YOU KEEP IT ? - About 6 months

WHY DID YOU SELL IT ??? - Seemed like a better idea !! that, and the RD350B that replaced it. (I still have the RD......)

cheers

The Bike - Honda 350 / 4
The Date - 1978 or 9
Why - was cheap and looked Big
Memorable moment / s - being pulled over for riding an oversized bike by 2 bike cops who could easily see I was a learner AND running the left hand header pipe along the kerbing at the Kew Boulevard around the last corner while showing off . (thats how those leathers went brown)
Why it went - Got a Z650 with an aftermarket full fairing , great bike .

Had an air cooled rd350 around that time . wish i still had it ThisIsYourLifeDave , wild thing !
Ummmm let me see

1971 CB250 K1
Date: late 2002/early 2003.
cost: $200 as-is.
Bought because: i wanted to have a go at restoring something url here (seriously, have a look)
Most memorable moment #1: actually getting it started, considering it took a couple months of work to get it to that point!
memorable moment #2: Proceeding to blow the engine up on the M2 60+km from home.

Why it went:
See memorable moment #2. Something to do with a hole the size of a 5cent peice in the piston

mate, I will never sell mine. They are the ducks guts really. As far as I am concerned, every motorcyclist should be forced to ride a Yamaha 2-stroke twin for at least 12 months, in order to really appreciate muddaboikes :D

hmmm, let me see

DATE- sometime about 1970/71

BIKE- Spewzie TS185 traillie

DESCRIPTION - a kickstart nightmare with biscuit tins for brakes
not that it mattered, you just fell off during emergency stops

MEMORABLE MOMENT- having a very ernest discussion with the local police sergeant who very much did NOT like the fact that while riding a motorcycle on the Queens highways....
I had NO licence (coz I was underage) and NO helmet and had just left the Boundary Hotel in Bentleigh East (Melb suburb) where I had been drinking
and that meant that I was in a certain amount of trouble
yeah like....
He was gonna tell my Mum
which meant oh shit, I am for it now.

HOW MUCH COST ?- nuffing, I sorta borrowed it from my gf at the time
well aaah, actually it did. I tell a lie -
I ended up marrying the bikes owner

WHY DID I BUY IT ?? - my gf was riding it, my mates had bikes
and i only had a treadly (being under the legal age to get a licence)
so I just HAD to have a bike to ride

HOW LONG DID YOU KEEP IT ? - About 30months
well actually the gf kept it

WHY DID YOU SELL IT ??? - after i got a job
and a car, i thought I am gunna have my OWN bike
so..........
I bought a Kwaka MachIII, one of the most dangerous bikes ever made

and so started a fascination with things two wheeled.

cheers

Smitty, I am going to ride down to Melbourne and bring around a slab, so we can compare old biking stories. My first REAL big bike ( after the RD) was a 750H2. These things are still spoken about in hushed tones. I still have mine. It is still fast. Very fast. Scary fast. At least the stock hinge in the frame has been removed......

The nickname 'Widowmaker' for the H1 has its roots in EnZed. Allegedly, the first 12 H1's shipped into Kiwiland during 1970/71were all written off in horrific prangs, and so were the original owners, RIP.

respectfully yours

Date? Sometime early in the 80's,

Bike? 1979 RS125, single pot 2 stroke, with raised mudguards, knobbly tyres and a home made exhaust by previous owner

Memorable moment? getting air chasing a 250, attempted down change mid jump, landing with foot still on gear lever and totally stuffing the selector shaft.

How much did it cost? 125 pounds

Why did I buy it? I wanted a bike to ride with everyone else and a mate was selling it.

How long did have it? about 6 years, with other off road bikes.

Why did I sell it? I didn't, I assume it is still in my mates garage where we stripped the gearbox, got disheartened and forgot about it.

Overall rating, shithouse, but taught me a bit about riding bikes, loads about 2 stroke mechanics and kept an early teen amused for a while

Dunno if this counts, 'cos I never actually parted with any money for it ...

DATE: Some time in the late 80s
BIKE: Suzuki TS100
COST: I've forgotten how much Carb cleaner and two stroke oil were back then ...
WHY: I wanted to ride a motorbike, so I did.

Basically it was an old heap left against someone's shed for years. I cleaned the carb, premixed some fuel (no, I wasn't about to trust the oil "injection" system!) and learnt to ride it. Totally unregisterable, cool paddock basher. The highest speed it ever saw was 56 mph flat out down on the lucerne paddock with a strong tailwind. In 4th.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Doubling my brother back from the fishing hole about 9pm, what was left of the only light on the bike blew. Rode the sucker straight into the only patch of box thorn on the track. Yeeehaaa.

PERIOD OF OWNERSHIP: It's probably sitting right where I left it. My brother moved off the farm about 8 years ago.

OVERALL RATING: Pathetic, but I did learn to ride.

First Bike

Date: 1974
Model: Kawasaki 75 Minibike. Three gears no clutch
How Long: 1 year then traded on a Yamaha 80
Memorable moment: Flipped it in the driveway with my mate on the back trying to do wheelies. Landed in mum's Queen Elizabeth Rose Bush with the exhaust on my leg.
Result: Permanently mentally traumatised and have been a woose when it comes to wheelies ever since. I also have no Roses in my garden as I blame them totally for my accident.

First Road Bike

Date: 1981
Model Suzuki GSX250. Red one with the pointy tail
How Long: 2 years
Reason for getting rid of it: Put it into an EH Holden, got it fixed at Jim Eades and frame straightening being what it was back then it wobbled like buggery. Sold it to a bloke who thought the wobbles added character.
Replaced by: 650 Katana (the shaft drive jobby)
Memorable Moment: Losing 11 points in two days at The Entrance Xmas 81 after being pulled up by the same copper twice on two seperate days.
