A plan ...

After starting the new job in South Melbourne and commuting for a few months on a motorbike I found out that it's really not a good idea 1) The back hurts with 2-hrs/day commute 2) It's dangerous as I had been hit by a car yet again.

That leaves my R6 gathering dust in the garage and I don't ride enough to justify $700/yr rego with my current financial situation as it is now an unnecessary luxury.

I still want to have a bike, but I've been thinking to just get a classic bike (25+ yrs old) and club rego. I heard that you'd only pay $65/year. And if I can ride it once a month that's what I do these days anyway . Also nowadays I enjoy riding for the scenery/coffee more than giving heaps on every corner

So for a year I'd spend $65 rego + $80 insurance + club membership cost (how much do you think?)

Is this a sound plan? I've looked at bikesales and can buy something 'decent' for around $5k. Something like CB750 or XS1100. A Z1 unfortunately still demands $9k+

Is a good plan. In NSW you can get log book rego for historic bike. Means you can ride it 60 days a year plus maintenance runs. I joined VJMC for about $45.
My old z1000 is not rego yet but am working on it.
All good i guess if Vic has same. Good luck with

Club redg for my z900 is $40.00 , Vic roads is $73.00 for 45 days plus these days you must get a roadworthy which I think is around $120.00 ,the thing to take into account is get a reliable old bike because parts are expensive and there are also not a lot of mechanics around these days that either know how to fix them or even willing to work on them. And getting a good z900 for 9grand you might want to get a big piggy bank because unless your really lucky you will have some extra expenses coming your way. Not that I am ever going to sell my z900 but I wouldn't even consider $15,000, if I was, being an Australian delivered model and I have had it since it was 4 years old.Good luck Andy

Thanks. Yes, I understand that maintenance cost will be an issue so hopefully to find something popular and in good condition.

I kind a like these XS1100. They're made in 1978, have grunts, and easy on the back. I think they look great as well.

The quirks are the drive shaft and the way it handles corners (more throttle will raise the bike instead of squat?).. Apparently they're worth around $5k so half of any Z.

The intention is really to have something cheap to ride around. Just calculating the rego on my R6 it would cost $7000 in the next 10 years

Is that a scooter on your avatar?

Here is one with a top box and 12 months rego brand new for under $3000 9 $2990) ride away 8)

http://www.scootersales.com.au/news-rev ... eview.aspx

Brought one for my wife ... I ride it to the shops every day :D It's fuel injected , longer wheel base than other scooters and has larger wheels too (14 inch) , uses 2.04 litres of fuel, so goes 255km on a tank of 5.4 liters of juice.

I've always liked the Z650, and although some are climbing in cost, I think you could still find something cheapish?

Another "plan" is buy a 250 Balius. Cheap as, and cheap to run (though maybe not on club rego) and who cares if you're actually going quite slowly, that 19 000 redline will be such fun!

Wouldn't you pay the same rego for new scooter though!

Mine (actually dad's) was 150cc 1975 Vespa super. And 5 of us (Mum, dad, 2 brothers) ride on it every day when we were young 8)

Yes, I'm not trying to game the system so basically will enter every rides on the log book. Why, if I ride 45 days a year that would be a record

Thanks. I've done a bit or reading about these 650. Apparently they have great handling!

But the cheapest available with reasonably good condition is $6500. That's almost twice the price of my R6!

You're right Mel, it seem in good nick, the write up indicates a well cared for bike with not too many km for it's age
