Working within Statutory Write-Off Rules??

Postby pah » Wed Apr 01, 2015 3:39 pm

Hi Guys,

I've been looking at the Statutory Write-Off threads on the forum. I want to know if this is legal:

Buy a Statutory Write-Off. Buy a new frame to suit the bike. Transfer everything onto the new frame. Present the bike (with new frame number) to the NSW RMS for registration.

It seems to me that the RMS could not oppose the use of the engine from a Statutory Write-Off in another bike. It's entirely possible that a rider might buy a spare engine from a wreck for a registered bike. What does a new frame cost? I have no idea. What if anything am I overlooking?

The upside of Statutory Write-Offs. A cheap Hyabusa engine for a Westfield Megabusa track car??

What's the rule regarding repairable write offs now? If it's legal at the moment, the preferable (and easier) option is to just repair one of them.

Guys,

WOW - totally swamped with thoughts on this one!! ;-)

Let's assume some poor bloke drops his near new Hyabusa and repair costs make it a statutory write-off. Let's assume that another Hyabusa suffers the same fate. Let's assume for the sake of the argument that I buy bikes for peanuts (because they statutory write-offs) and that I am able to salvage parts from Bike 2 to fix Bike 1. If my understanding of statutory write-offs is correct, I cannot register a perfectly OK bike in NSW! Now what?

Take the bike across the border and sell it there?

Here's another possible option: Buy a Megabusa Kit and use the Suzuki 1300 engine to power it:

Go and buy a rideable bike and pay some bloke what it's worth instead of trying to get something for next to nothing....
I for one am happy with the NSW legislation............ It has closed one loop hole to discourage the farken thieves in this state.....

Your understanding is incorrect. The WOVR is nationwide and a stat writeoff cannot be registered in any state.

Myself and Maccarocks and plenty of other members around here have fixed up damaged bikes and enjoyed and benefited from it. Each to their own.
