Riding with Specs - Tips

The old eyes have slowly been losing their edge over the last few years ( yeah yeah I now what it is from ) and apparently the $2 servo specs are not enough. So I have been issued a brand spanking new pair of very exxy peepers. So the challenge now is getting used to the suckers while riding. I went for a ride over the weekend with a few mates through the usual rain, drizzle, fog, cloud, sun, dark, headlights etc. Great ride but trying to break old and well trusted habits was a punish with the new speccles.

So to the point of this post. Those who have been riding for a while wearing specs, do you have any tips that may be useful or can you tell me what works best for you so I can try it. I will eventually figure it out but some on you may save me the trial and error with it.

I take it that you need them for long distance ?

Depending on the correction factor, this will make it hard to read your speedo/tacho/gps, because they will be blurry.

You may need bifocal or multifocal lenses.

The other problem is with Transition lenses - because your visor reduces UV transmission, the Transition lense does not darken as much as a dark tint lens.

I had to get prescription sunglasses for the car and bike to cut the glare.

And if you buy a new helmet, always take your specs with you to try the fit.

I wear my specs all the time and until I bought my Shark Helmet It has always been a compromise between fit comfort and vision, these are designed to take into account spectacle wearers and the drop tinted visor takes away the hassle of having your sunnies on when you don't need them or vice versa, extremely comfortable for me and I believe for a few on this site as well, well worth the look

Whatevrr u do just dont wear glass lenses. Had a smallrock thrown up by car in front and it punched a chunk of glass into my eye. Thankfully a mate was following snd was able to remove it before any damage was done. However most specs these days are plastic and shouldnt pose an issue. Beware of anti fog stuff and the coatings on the lens. Regarfless of anti scratch coating always wash dust and bugs off when cleaning and dont just use your t shirt use a clean micro fibre cloth.

I have multifocal lenses so I guess it becomes a toss up between having a tinted visor and swapping visors, prescription sunnies and taking both specs with me, transition lenses (don't know much about these).

That shark helmet looks like it might be worth a shot too. How does it go with fogging up?

I will slip down and find out what they are made of on the weekend, I still have to figure this out for the track as well so good point about the glass. I already have a bruise type thingy on the back of one eye from a big stack a few years back. Don't wanna damage them any further

I had one of those drop down visor sharks. The visor is pretty lightly tinted. Not as dark as any standard sunnies but certainly came in handy when you forgot your sun glasses. Held up well in a minor stack. Little bit of wind noise, but that might have been due to my weird shaped head.

Not every can wear contacts and sometimes they can be a real pain in the arse. Particularly when one of them goes wonky or flicks out. Then the shit may hit the fan big time. However some swear by them and have had no probs at all

there are prescription plastic glasses for cyclists. also seem to be designed to go under helmets. might be worth getting a pair for the track.

Take the fuckers off mate. They'll only slow you down. I don't wear mine riding. That way, I've hit the road crud, the bike's had a little shimmy and we're back on it before I've realised what's happened. Wearing glasses... You'll see the shit, hit the picks and likely upset the bike.......

That's exactly what I did on this run, found they were a pain in the arse and gave them the flick, although they did work a treat at night. I was figuring that I would have to deal with it at some stage which is why I asked the question.
