Police caught a learner motorcyclist allegedly travelling at 230kph on a high powered motorbike in Melbourne's west last night.

Police said the 21-year-old was riding a 1000cc motorbike even though his license only allows him to ride a 260cc bike.

The Deer Park man was intercepted travelling towards the city on the Western Ring Road at 10pm.

He is expected to be charged with riding at a dangerous speed and exceeding the speed limit by 45km or more.



Police also detected another man allegedly driving a car at 169kph on the Princes Freeway in Hoppers Crossing, also in Melbourne's west last night just before 7pm.

The 33-year-old Point Cook man was fined $440 and lost his licence for 12 months.

Even when ya think ya know the roads just remember watch out for tractors and other farm implements oh and animals, they appear suddenly ferkin quick! If you know milking times, the seasons and crops ya pritty right.
But hey, I like quick and fast and Iam no do gooder either, it is leaving ya self some room when ya come flying around a corner, read the road and the enviroment. Cows in paddock means there must be a cow on the road later perhaps, school means kids running out etc. so on and so on. Be a thinking rider

A learner motorcyclist with two months' riding experience told police he was only testing his bike after he sped past them at 230 km/h on the Western Ring Road.

The 21-year-old was riding a 1000cc motorcycle - not a 250cc bike allowed for learners - when he drove past police just before 10pm on Monday.

Officers from the Region 2 traffic unit watched in disbelief as the man sped past and were able to catch up to him only when he fell off the bike and landed in grass by the side of the road.

"It was quite scary . . . using the road at the time, to have a vehicle going past like that. It seems like you've got a jumbo jet landing on you," the unit's Senior Sergeant Ken Scott said. "He (the motorcyclist) said he was taking his bike for a bit of a ride, testing it out, to see how fast it would go."

The Deer Park man is expected to be charged with riding at a dangerous speed and exceeding the speed limit by 45 km/h or more.
