warning labels in my new leathers

Postby oldrdrider » Thu Oct 20, 2011 7:30 am

Hi All,

I just purchased a madif 2pc GT suit for weekends and action motorcycles said in the description online CE armor in elbows shoulders and knees. Last night i took the jacket out to go for a ride and noticed a label on the inside which says "the manufacturer does not consider this personal protective gear and as such no tests have been conducted on it and the maufacturer accepts no responsibility for injury while wearing"

I know Madif make berik and arlen ness leathers but should i assume that means its ok or should i take them back and get something that i know is CE certified? Sorry just never seen a label like this in leathers and got me wondering about the purchase as i cant find any info online.

Any feedback would be great

Cheers Paul

Certainly better than shorts and thongs... :kuda:
Never assume especially when it comes to your safety. Having said that warning labels are just that and in this case it may be that the armour, in that suit, has not been tested. It may be the same armour as used in other suits that do have certification though but hard to verify.

If your safety is a concern and/or the reason for buying the suit then you may be better off returning it and getting something with certification.

Bottom line ...it's your skin so your decision :kuda:

I agree with John. Take it back and get something that the manufacturer HAS tested and CAN guarantee. If necessary, pay MORE for a better suit. You only get one life, it's worth protecting.

warning labels in my new leathers

Postby Wattie » Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:06 am

No manufacturer will guarantee against injuries while wearing their suit.

However I would think they should be at least CE certified

I would guess that most 2 piece suits are like that.. hence the cheaper price.. at the end of the day they're not meant to be race leathers :) for road riding should be fine :kuda:

warning labels in my new leathers

CE certification applies to the armor only. There are no legal requirements for any suit, no standards the suit has to adhere to and therefor does not apply as safety clothing. This applies to gloves and boots too!! The only piece of official "safety" gear available to buy is a helmet.

This means u could spend $$$$$ on a brand name race suit and it could have inferior material or stitching & there is nothing you can do (as in crash protection not manufacturing defects). If the CE armor fails you do have options. Best buying options are to look for double stitching throughout (tripple on high impact areas) and double thickness on common contact places such as back of the pants, knees, elbows and shoulders.

Even a top grade helmet can not guarantee you will not get injured!

We have to buy leathers in the hope they do work. Ride! magazine runs regular destruction testing on a variety of motorcycle gear, and pride themselves that they don't take kickbacks.

Many motorcycle associations have appealed for industry standards and safety classification, but so far to no avail

Ill do some research and make sure the armour is CE certified then im sure that the suit itself will still be better protection than the jeans and dririder mesh jacket i have been wearing for the last 5 years. If not CE on the armour ill take it back and get a new one.

Thanks for the quick replies

You'll be right. If the armor is CE approved it will be labelled.
One of Ride! magazines tests is to abrasion test a piece of the suits material on a sander belt. They time how long the sample takes to wear through. Demin and Gortex do not last very long!

WTF? How many 2 piece suits have you seen like this? I haven't seen any with a label like that and we have five different brands of leathers with three of them being two piece suits in our house. The same thing happens when you crash on the road as does on the track so I would think you would want the same level of protection and from what I have seen, decent two piece suits cost just as much as equivalent one piece suits.

not fit for the purpose it was sold. think thats clear grounds for a refund.

at least before the start of the year. not sure where the new laws are

http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/8818

fit for the purpose or job that the consumer described to you or that are self-evident

here it is

http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.ph ... 6994#h3_29

Fit for specified purpose

Goods must be fit for any purpose that you told the consumer they would be fit for prior to them purchasing the goods. Goods must also be fit for any purpose that the consumer made known to you before purchasing the goods.

fair enuf.. I stand corrected.. for the record my berik 2 piece has one of those labels too but at the end of the day leathers like this aren't mean to be an impenatrable shield.. Its all about improving yer odds in an off :)

warning labels in my new leathers

Postby photomike666 » Thu Oct 20, 2011 10:07 pm

Fit for purpose yes, but not legally a safety item. They are as much fit for the purpose as any other item of clothing. Therefor fit for purpose only means you can ride in them.

There are no standards WORLDWIDE!! Leathers do not have to undergo any testing and are simply that - a leather suit. If they had to pass a test the whole suit would have either a CE mark (not just the armor), a Euro Kite mark or an AS number same as helmets.

Yep, most suits have CE armour but aren't subject to testing for abrasion, burst and penetration.

The WAS+ suit from Gimoto has CE2 approval for the entire garment. As far as I'm aware, it's the only suit in the world to meet the required specifications. Sorry for the plug :D
