License and bike help

Postby iamvinhy » Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:18 pm

heyy all! getting my license in about 2months

I need some help..
for one thing.. do you have to be 16, 9months in NSW to get your bike L's?

and another, would anyone suggest a first bike being a ZX2R? I love the look of them and reckon they're hot.. its one of the only bikes I like in the 250's.

Whats my limit of CC's I can get in a learner bike? Am I aloud up to 600cc or something? I heard the laws had changed etc .. help plz! :D

Welcome Iamvinhy good luck with your licence. As for the type of scoot to start on. Have you had much experience on dirt bikes etc ?, if you have had a fair bit then you may Survive a ZX2R (others have) if you haven't then I'd recommend a GPX250 to start on. Remember its not how fast you are Today its how old you are Tomorrow & your STILL riding that Counts. As for nsw stuff I'll leave that to the local guys to give you the good oil.

G'day mate.

Zx2r's are sweet, but remeber the more plastic you drop the plastic you have to fix. As Pontikat said, the GPX may be a better option for a first road bike.
still full fairing but less brakeable.

but if you really want a zx2r go for it and enjoy :)

G'day mate and welcome to our world.

Some advice I just gave my brother in law (18 this week) is don't make a motorbike your first tool on the road. Get inside a car and learn the road rules, how traffic works and most importantly what to look for with people cutting you off. You know, road craft. If you are learning to ride a motorbike and learning road craft all at once (and doing it on something like a ZX2R) it will be sensory overload.

You might be alright but then again you might be scared to death. One of my buddies (after 8 years driving experience) got his bike license and and nearly didn't make it through 1 week. The on-road experience and learnign to ride a bike was too much for him... and I honestly thought he would be a natural. Good news he stuck with it and still rides now.

If you are hell bent on riding then at the very least get your license and try to ride someone elses bike for a while. Just be sure you are really ready to blow the big coin on a bike of your own.

Then, hit the RTA website (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au) and look for LAMS or Learner Approved bikes for a list of the bikes you can and cannot ride. There are quite a few bikes up to 600cc that you can ride, but it is all about power to weight so don't think that the LAMS 600 will go like a ZX6R!
If you are still in there and keen to ride there is a group in Sydney specifically for L's and P's and you will be amongst friends there. Go to http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/LearnerProvisional/ and check that out for heaps more info.

Finally, I don't know too much about the 2R and you would do well to find someone that has owned one if you are thinking of getting one. Generally, there is no such thing as a bargain in 2nd hand 250s. They are ususally cheap for a reason so be careful and buy wisely.
The Doc says my blood is green. Thankfully, there is nothing he can do to help :)

You can do you L's on certain bikes up to 600cc, mainly underpowered overweight ones..
If I was on my L's and had a good amount of riding experience up my sleeve, I'd consider something like a gpz500 or ER 500. Mainly cause when you outgrow the 250 they will have that little extra power to enjoy..
I say that because I did my L's on a gpz500, that was before the LAMs rules too. I just took the lower fairing off that had the 500 sticker on it.. Now there bloody learner legal...:-) a bit old though...
I went 2 up and fully loaded to P.I. on it.. :?
And I'd been on my L's for 2 years prior on my KDX 250... Didn't want to get my blacks in case I lost my licence...

I'll second some of those comments.

Been looking around for a secondhand 250 for the gf, but geez they're crap value - regularly around $4k for something that is 10 years old (or more!) with a ton of k's on 'em.

I bought an ER-5 as my first (and so far only) bike, and I am glad I did. They are more useful than most people give them credit for, and to illustrate my above point, I got a '99 model with 34,000km for $3900, on road with 12 months full comp insurance.

The Zuki GS500 is a worthy contender too, and was my second choice, however I like the liquid cooling the ER-5 has, especially as it gets used in slooooow traffic a bit. So stay with kwaka...

Good points from everywhere - learn to race on a track, learn to survive on the road.
