Oh yeah - you need balls like watermelons down here......
With the express permission of the owner/builder - I have great pleasure in giving you an inside look at the latest and greatest Dirt Weapon, which is currently evolving in a local workshop. Laurie Smith is our suspension guru down here at Anarchy Road, and he is building one hell of a dirt bike.......
Here are some pictures and a bit of background .......
The donor bike - a 2004 ZX10R. Yes, its a Crim !!! Donor front end, rest of the bike slowly being dismantled....New front end installed - r/h side New front end installed - l/h sideView from the "Flying W" position !!! Hopefully we won't see too much from here....Detail shot of clearance between front guard and radiator. Original plan was for 2 x vertical radiators, but this may not be required....Rear wheel has now been sourced - here is the initial trial fit-up.....Detail shot of rear brake. The rear wheel has same-size axle as the 10 - its a KTM rear wheel & disc combo.Detail shot of rear sprocket initial fit-up. Lots of work to complete here for a proper install....... Another detail shot of the rear sprocket, showing how wide the rear cush-drive/spacer combo has to be. About 32.5mm.....roughly Another detail shot of the rear brake - all spaced up correctly, and ready for a m/cyl and lever assembly to be fitted....Detail shot of the cush-drive/sprocket carrier. This has been machined up and fitted with nolathane bushes to create a decent cush-drive.New position of battery, and this is also where the ECU will mount up. Commencement of footpeg mounting. These are the flash 'swivel' pegs - I need a set of these on the big ZX750MX !!! Detail shot of template for footpeg bracket.Detail shot of completed l/h footpeg assembly. Solid as, and very neat.Detail shot of completed l/h side gearchange and footpeg. All done, should work a treat. Thats an XR600 gearlever. BOO to Honda parts !! Detail shot of r/h brake lever and footpeg template. I think its RM250-sourced ? Detail shot of rear brake and footpeg bracket completed. Again, solid as......Rear brake all assembled and working. There happened to be a HEL line floating in the workshop which did the job nicely...Thats where its up to at this point. I was over at the workshop today, and will be helping Laurie out with the electricals - he needs the entire harness shortened so that the ECU and associated bits can all be fitted up very neatly at the base of the tank / forward of the shock mount. The exhaust valve actuator has also been moved up forward, so that will need to have its wiring modified to suit.......in return, Laurie is going to do a number on the MFP12 suspension for me
very much looking forward to the outcome of that little massage, I can tell you.....
The rest of the plan is to build a c/f tank/seat unit, with a capacity of 10-12 litres, the rear sub-frame will be modified (shortened) quite a bit, and a proper current-style motocross seat will be fitted to match the new tank. Laurie has some experience in building c/f tanks, so this job will be pretty straightforward for him to complete.
This thing is going to be a hell of a weapon when its finished. I will be putting up my hand for a spin, if he wants any test-pilots.....
So there you go. Can't wait to see this one finished (he has only been going at this now for about 4 weeks ???? Amazing progress so far....
