Insurance & age

Hi all,

Excuse me while I rant!

Just been poking around with insurance for my hopefully upcoming bike purchase. I'm a 24 year old male... Now apparently my fellow 24 year old males take delight in burning, throwing bricks at, and possibly even leaving the keys in their bikes with a big 'STEAL ME' sign propped on the tank.

The NRMA online insurance guesstimator literally halves the premium if I change my date of birth so that I'm (just) 25. Now why 5 months makes that much difference to my riding ability (none to speak of anyway!) or general tendency to (I'm guessing) drink until paralytic and believe I'm really Valentino Rossi with a neater haircut, I'm not entirely sure.

Sadly, whatever the difference is, it's a bloody expensive one!

Cheers,

Danny

That'll be cause under 24s are a higher risk bracket than 25+...

It generally keeps going down as you age...

Experience generally has nothing to do with it.

try suncorp but due to your age it would be pretty expensive.

Full comp for me on my "old 04 ZX6R" was 860ish a year.

I am 29 Rating 1 for life so it was still very expensive.

When i purchased my bike, i got quotes of around $1800 for full comp insurance (28years old on L plates) from NRMA, Western QBE and so on. I was ready just to take the massive risk of puting 3rd party property on it for $150.

The guys at Action at parramatta rang up a company called Famous Insurance and they said that they would recognise my car no claim bonus even though i was on my L's on a bike (no experience)....to insure my bike for market value with full comp insurance was under $400 per year....i've already had one "not at fault" claim and there were no problems at all with that...

I'd recommend you checking these guys out...

...at the ripe old age of 40 mine dropped last birthday to $348 fully comprehensive with Swann. This was about $40 cheaper than Arista (or whatever they're called now). The only issue I have is that they won't do monthly direct debit for amounts less than $400. RACV will do monthly direct debit, but they wanted to charge me $698 for the pleasure.

I think it's been mentioned here before, but give Shannons a call. Apparently they are doing bikes now and are cheaper than Aristas.

I think Shannons do a weekend ride only policy Jas.

As for insurance I dont think we can really whinge about the price n keep a straight face, look at all the bloody horizontal parking done around here & the price to fix the scoots is INSANE.

I've made a few claims over the years myself so even though the prices are dear i think the repair prices are worse.

Of course anyone currently with a registered bike that has got to 60% No Claim status on a bike (car carry overs dont count) & hasnt made a claim in the last 5 years can tell me I'm full of shit. I'd be interesting to see how many of us are out of pocket to the insurance companies.

Cheers Brett

Hehe, yeah, I realise it's just the changeover from the 18-24 to 25+, but it still deserves a damn good whinge!

Sounds like NRMA aren't the best place for insurance for bikes anyway, so maybe I'll manage cheaper elsewhere.

As for what variety of scoot, I'm going to do QRide in Feb or March and see how I feel on the power question after that. An ER-5 or GS500 is looking good at the moment though - cheap is good! A ZZR600 or even an SV650 would be great but would have to be a damn good deal.

I'm sitting on a rating one, 60% ncb. I've never needed to make a claim. O' course, my car rating carried over to the bikes. No car no more ...

I have two bikes insured with Suncorp, one comprehensive, one TPFT, costs $666/yr. Owzzat?!
