Not sure if this is a nationwide, or just a Queensland problem, so bare with me. This is a bloody law knot.

As a learner, one may carry a pillion passanger, provided that passanger has held a motorcycle licence of equivalent or higher (RE or R) licence (even "P"s) for a minimum one year, and that passanger is taking the role of a driving instructor.

However, once one has their licence, RE or R, they cannot carry a pillion passanger, even said instructor mentioned above, for a year. Bit contradictory, but I don't mind that so much. Here's the part I've just heard, and if true, really burns me.

If said student after a year of holding a RE licence, upgrades to an R licence, his pillioning rights are revoked, for the period of a year!

What kind of bullshit is that? Can anyone confirm or deny this? (Particularly those with those driving manuals/rulebooks they dish out to learners [threw mine out years ago]). I've searched for confirmation on the net and come up with diddly, at least relevent directly to QLD.

I mean, if its true, what the hell happens if I pillion someone on a 250 now? I mean shit, I've got spare gear, and have been pillioning for years, and now I find out its not legal anymore, so I can't even use the fucking gear! ARGH!

under no circumstances can you carry a pillion until you have a full licence
for at least 12 months...
thats it
and they must wear a helmet, bike must have a seat, a handgrip and footrests they can use for them ...etc etc

Kempy i just pulled out the rule book n after about 15mins cross checking heres what i think it means.
page 46 says -:
before carrying a passenger on your motorbike, you must have held your current Provisional or Open motorbike licence for that size motorbike for at least one year.
After another 15mins reading i think the only time you could double someone in the first period is before you are assesed by Qride on the larger capacity bike if they had held an open class licence for more then 1 year.
So you can double anyone on the 250 but no one untill 12 months are up for the 750.
Pillion being licenced only applies while you are considered to be a learner.

Yep, must have held a ticket for 12 months on the class size of bike you are riding/pillioning.

thats the way i got my licence

After I got warned for unlicenced riding
(riding the bike without the piece of paper..ooops)
me mum drove me down to the Brighton copshop, showed the seargeant
my (paper) birth certificate and walked out with a bike licence....
and 3 months later got off the TS185 and bought a MachIII ...woohoo
and think the gf was a pillion from day1....

Brett and I were discussing this the other day when I rocked up to his place with the missus on the back...
I was pretty sure it was 12 months...

When i were a lad, we used to dream about going 200kph, but on a more serious note, i remember when i was a lad i used to have to walk half way to school at 12ish in the snow where i met my brother who was coming home from school. There he would give me the shoes to wear and i would continue on to school

Only 8 months to go before I can legally carry her on the back...

My wife recently went through the system of gaining her learners permit and then her open licence. (She has been driving for 13 years).
Whilst learning, she had to be followed by a licenced rider (in car or on bike) or have a licenced rider pillion with her.
Once she gained her licence, she cannot take a pillion for the first twelve months.
So I think, Kempy, you are correct.
It is only a QLD thing as far as I know...

Sounds like a b*llsh!t law to me...

In the US of NSW (as Mina lovingly called it!), you can carry a pillion once you have held your licence for 12 months - that is regarless of whether it is a P plate or a full bike licence.
