Sorry for the double post had to put some dinner back "eyes are bigger then my body".
I just read the posts again n now see what Yoda's saying. So if i turn the bike OFF the input shaft stops spinning and it wont clunk yes ?. But also wont engage as well casue its not being mechanically engaged(centrifical forces & so on). Inversly wont holding the clutch in longer to reduce the Clunk increase Clutch wear ?.

i thought most of the bikes had cluncky gearboxes.

supposedily the new R6 clunk can be heard loudly

The gears will engage without the engine running, but the gears need to have stopped in a nearly lined up position. If it won't go in, a small rock forward will line it up well enough. Also, different pitch gears will drop into gear better than others.

Wear on the clutch is minimal. The oil is creating drag between the plates, not surface friction.

Yeah but we're talking about walking pace at the fastest here, and I pop it into gear when the traffic comes to a stop. I really don't want to hold onto the clutch for that long else my hand doesn't work properly when I need it to...I know I've tried it :roll:

yep correct
and the bikes with dry (not in oil) clutches that I have ridden
..like a Duc916..don't have this issue with gear selection

they certainly have other issues, the last ducati I rode did :lol:

When you are holding the clutch in, there is no clutch wear as the drive plates & friction plates have been disengaged & are rotating separately with oil between them. Same as when the clutch is out and therefore fully engaged (both sets of plates are rotating as one unit).
The clutch plates only wear as you are pulling the clutch in (a little bit) and letting the clutch out to take off (more). Hard take-offs/red-light drag races cause the most wear to your clutch.

Fair Nuff Wanna makes sence ..... now thanks for that. I tried it tonight on the Tiggr held the clutch in for like a minute light turned green tried to put it in gear.....um .... tried to put it gear........ bugger....... tried a 3rd time ... doughy feeling so nope ..... let clutch out pull it back in ...select gear ..... "CLUNK" .
Was laughing so hard I fogged up my Lid.

Well at least you got a good laugh out of it 8)
What happened there Brett was that you held the clutch in for so long that the gearbox shafts stopped spinning altogether and they didn't stop perfectly lined up for you to select the gear (as per Yodas post).
You have 3 options when this happens:
1. Hold the gear lever down and slowly let the clutch out. This will engage the gear (will usually make the clunk noise anyway)
2. Hold the gear lever down and rock the bike back & forth slightly (which in turn rotates the gears and thus will help it all line up) until the gear engages
Or 3. Do what you did - let the clutch out and then pull it back & in and select the gear (which as you found out makes the clunk noise again. Mainly because you now don't have the time to hold the clutch in before you select a gear due to the traffic backed up behind you LYAO (laffin your ass off) 8)

What I actually recommend is that you don't hold the clutch in for quite so long. About 4-6 seconds is usually sufficient. But if you ever get the case that it won't go into gear, I use method 1 as it is the quickest.
