What amuses me more than any discussions about hijabs V helmets .....is the total lack of evidence to prove that the discharge of static electricity while seated on a motorcycle is a likely cause of forecourt fires.........actually, I know why there is no evidence of this. It's because there is no evidence of this. Let me repeat that s-l-o-w-l-y.....there is NO EVIDENCE that remaining seated on a motorcycle, while filling the tank, is likely to cause a fire due to static electricity discharge. None. Not one motorcyclist in Australia has ever been char-grilled from this .

FFS, if this was true, or even had any *remote* possibility of being true, then why the hell aren't cars fitted with sidestands, so they can put the sidestand down when they stop at a bowser, to earth the car out ??? EH ??? Why the HELL NOT ?????

Some of you may remember those old 'static straps' fitted to Dad's Kingswood back in the 60's and 70's. These were required, because the toothless old fogeys who drove them around, wore fuckin' POLYESTER PANTS, and had NYLON SEAT COVERS....so of course very time they slid their sagging arses in and out of the Belmont, they built up a small static charge.

Well thank fuck it's 2009, and most of the world has long ceased wearing polyester pants.........well, most of the world, except perhaps for a small corner of Queensland, who still wear polyester pants AND undies, and continue to believe that static electricity is a safety problem in a petrol station forecourt.

Here's some late-breaking news Neil - as SOON as I stop and put my feet on the ground, and then *grab the pump handle* while still sitting comfortably on my fine Kawasaki motorcycle - every nanovolt of static electricity is safely and immediately discharged. No need for a static strap, either on the car or the bike.

What I really want to know is - what the hell do those bike-riding Muslim chicks do when asked to remove the helmet ??

Most companies have the removal of a motorbike helmet either before filling or entering - usually in the name of staff safety.

My questions these -
Why is it only applied to motorbike riders and not all customers? (leaving aside religion and beliefs). e.g my local servo has no problems serving people with beanies, a scarf and sunnies on.

Given it is applied only to motorbike riders doesn't this create a presumption that motorbike riders are criminals and require facial identification? (I ride therefore I'm a violent criminal and thief - gonna ride away with a whopping $12 worth of petrol)

If the "staff safety" factor is in fact the primary reason for such policies, where does it stop? "I'm sorry sir - you have to remove your jacket because it's capable of concealing a weapon"? "I'm sorry sir, those pants can conceal a sawn-off shotty", "I'm sorry sir, your thong seems to have a concealed weapon"?

Common courtesy? - applies both ways. Don't treat me like a criminal because I ride and I'll be polite and friendly during our 15second transaction.

I've only been asked once - took it off to reveal my balaclava - truck driver behind me burst out laughing.

There has *never* been one single documented example in Australia, of a motorcyclist having his lazy, stupid arse roasted, because he chose to sit on his bike when filling it up.

In a car you can sometimes build up some static, on woolen seats etc. However, on most sports bikes, your pants are touching the tank or another metalic object to discharge any static electricity that may build up from wearing, say synthetic motorbike gear, the charge never builds becuase it is dissipated as soon as it forms.
Now, heres the scenario where it may happen. Maybe on a big crusier, i have seen them with woolen seats, and your legs are usually nowhere near the tank, so the charge might build up between you, and the woolen seat. You pull up to said petrol station, put your feat on the ground (rubber sole boots) charge not dissipated yet, then grab the fuel and open the cap and BOOM your balls are on fire But since this is a sports bike forum and not a goldwing forum, the chances of it happening to a memeber here is slim. You are usually touching metallic parts of the bike constantly, unlike in a car which has alot of plastic interior and thus the charge can build substantially.

Anywhow, i dont see the benifit of filling up the bike while sitting on it? I would not feel comfortable filling the bike while sitting on it, if something unexpected happened(like a bee flying into your eye ! ) and it ended up the bike falling over, your going down too and petrol everywhere and real sparks between metal and concrete may ignite the bike along with you who has petrol soaked clothers.
