and dave,
is the kill switch a common problem on all bikes??
is it worth servicing it now rather than when it stops working?

The kill switch can be an issue on a lot of bikes. Especially those bikes where the owner insists on using the ignition key to turn the bike off !@!!

The purpose of a kill switch is to interupt the power supply ( +12v) to the coils. This will ensure that your engine cuts out dead, as it should.

Sure, ignition switches will also do this, but they are designed to provide power to all other circuits - continued use of the ignition key to turn the bike off will *almost* guarantee problems down the road.

All they generally need is a quick spray with wizards piss. Thats it. Not a lot of work for piece of mind.

I-K wrote: a better idea is not to touch it; turn the ignition on and off with the key, not the killswitch

Nonsense. The killswitch should always be used to turn your bike off. If they weren't required or needed for a purpose, then why would they be fitted ?? This is the reason most killswitches fuck out........because people use the ignition key instead, the killswitch then develops *issues* through lack of use ( like rust and corrosion, however small), and because the killswitch is an integral part of the ignition coil circuit, VOILA, you have misfiring/poor running/NO running problems.

Use The Killswitch Vince, It Is Your Friend

Oh, man, here we go. Bigendians vs littlendians, take 46...

If they weren't required or needed for a purpose, then why would they be fitted??

The reason they gave when I went to n00b school was that the killswitch is a safety device, used to cut spark to the engine in an emergency without taking either hand off the bars.

This is the reason most killswitches fuck out........because people use the ignition key instead, the killswitch then develops *issues* through lack of use

...and then you have the old wives' tale I heard ahead of all the others; that killswitches fail through *over*use. Leave them in one position, on, and you minimise trouble-causing wear.

The only bike I ever had killswitch trouble with was the GPz500S I used to courier on. Went shopping for a replacement switchblock, and the dude at the wreckers mumbled sagely, "Guy before ya musta turned it onanorf with the killswitch all the time."

Your hypothesis also makes sense, though; who to believe?

u bastards!
who do i believe?
fugged if i know.
on one hand, i've always used the key.
but on the other hand i've been riding less than a year.
one question tho dave, is using the key bad only cos u don't use the kill switch? o can it cause other issues? and why is it red?

Overuse without preventative maintenance is the problem. I have seen so many problems with kill switches that weren't used regularly...

Thats why you give them a blast with wizards piss every coupla 3 years or so, it reduces and removes any light corrosion build-up. ( I am talking about an 'everyday' bike here, not a weekend warrior.)

A hypothesis is only a 'possible' solution. Reality is that using your kill switch all the time will not stuff it ( and if this logic was correct, then exactly the same problem can be expected by using your ignition key all the time  )

Safety purposes, dead right, absolutely. Its far safer to flick the kill switch off with your thumb in an emergency than use the ignition switch. If you use the killswitch regularly, you will always go for it in an emergency, not the ignition switch...........which is exactly what you will do if you use the ignition switch to shut the bike down all the time   its called force of habit. You use the ignition key to turn the bike on.......not off.

Of course this is just my personal opinion, and opinions are like arseholes, 'cause everyone's got one, and usually they are full of shit. :D

BTW I think all front wheels should also be turned to the RIGHT when you park your bike using the sidestand. If you turn the front wheel to the LEFT, you are obviously gay.

Yes, its only bad because you get used to turning the bike off with key, and in an emergency, if you need to shut it down quick, then (a) you won't automatically go for the kill switch because you never use it, (b) it is probably fully rusted up inside  and won't move at all..........

They are red just for safety purposes. It grabs your attention and says "This is where you turn me off Baby !!!"

and that is why Ignition keys are NOT red.

So Endeth The Sermon.
