Glasses wearers... What do you use for riding?

Postby rtyuiop » Sun Nov 13, 2005 1:38 pm

Hi all,

Well, being the good bespectacled computer geek that I am, I of course have to wear glasses or similar while riding (or anything else that involves seeing anything out of arm's reach!).

I'm just about due for an eye check and maybe some new glasses... And I need some shade for the eyes when riding (I don't own sunglasses at the moment - too much pain taking them on and off). I figure my options are: glasses + prescription sunnies (possibly something from http://www.wileyx.com.au/ or similar), or glasses + shaded or iridium visor (painful switching visors), or contacts and normal sunnies or a visor.

I don't normally wear contacts, so the idea of riding with them when not used to them is probably not a good idea... Other than that I can't see a big difference between the options.

What do the other people afflicted with bad eyes do?

Cheers,

Danny

The only times a vision issue arrises is when i'm wearing the "beer goggles" and not usually in control of a moving motorcycle... 8)

I don't need glasses yet but i did see a picture of a poor bastard who was wearing some with glass lenses. he'd had a stack and the glass shattered and went into his eyes. not pretty. so in my non professional and totally inexperienced opinion, stay away from glass lenses.

gudday mate.

i too am a spectical wearer :D

I have found that my glasses give me too many blind spots while riding, making head checks when you have one of those foam humps in your jacket near impossible to do safely on a sports bike.

I go contacts and sunnies and an iridium visor when i'm out fanging around in the hills

On the rare occasion that i do ride with my glasses on, the iridium visor just takes the glare off everything and its not too dark to have down on the short ride home from work at night (awaits flamage).

You could try convertables frames with the clip on sunnies, i have these but don't use em on bike.

Go the contacts and wrap arounds, no blind spots!!!

Contacts here...better vision, better peripheral vision...they are also quite cheap these days...especially the solution to store them in...

I wear glasses 365days a year, no contacts.
It has magnetic clip on shades which comes as a set with the frame. The best part is....I lost it on Thursday while going up the Gateway Bridge. Stong winds took it off...
Well....it did its job for 2yrs, I can't complain.

Hmm... Might have to give contacts a go then. How long did it take you guys to get used to them? Any worries about losing a contact while riding and not being able to get home or anything?

Mind you I think my brain is trained to never use my peripheral vision anyway, I've worn glasses for so long!

Bugger, I thought I was the only one with this problem, I did try contacts a few weeks ago, very good for head checks I must agree, but they tend to dry out very quickly with me anyway and my eyes end up very itchy, If anybody has an answer I would like to know it.

Had glasses since i was 13 cant see see well enough without them to find them some days when i wake up. Had a corneal graft at age 21 after writing a coupla brand new Gixxer toofiddys off. Doesnt everyone ride by colour ? I did for a coupla years

Get the smallest possible frame, thats the fashion anyway atm.
I have plastic lenses that tint all by them selves. I also use an irridium screen which i find works better then the normal dark tints but they scratch when you look sideways at them.
Hth.

Mark take your glasses & helmet to an Opthalmic Dispenser they can trim/bend them to make them a better fit with the helemt on. I find starring at night and the orange lamps a bigger pain in the bum to be honest.

I just wear my glasses. No tint, no tinted visor. I've been meaning to get some prescription sunnies for a while, just haven't had the motivation. I don't have a problem with peripheral vision, but that could be because I don't have much correction anyway.

I wear glasses - no tinting, with a clear visor. I did pay up extra for the shatter-resistant glasses, since I have them on while riding all the time.

The only problem I have with wearing glasses is in heavy rain -> if I'm not constantly moving, the glasses get fogged, so I have to crack the visor a little, then rain spatters on the glasses and reduces visibility, as you can't wipe them while riding as you can the visor.

I am planning on getting my eyeballs lasered next year though so I'm just in 'put up with it' mode until then.
