I just spoke to a gy regarding being a medic at the superbikes in march, and sounds awsome.

You dont get paid as its volunteer, but u get free camping and guest pass to the event and be on the INSIDE of the track.

There will be a training nite on teh tuesday BEFOR the supers at the alfred.

Just finsihed my first aid exam but no certidicate yet so guess i'm a no go alas, how qualified do they want their medics incidentally?

Sorry Foxy, I think that any medics they will be chasing will have to have more than a first aid certificate. I know that I would not feel very good having first aiders coming to my aid should I have a serious accident and im not putting them down they just dont have the training, bit like asking a security gaurd to work as a cop.

For instance, for us as ambulance officers, to remove a motorcycle helmet it is a 2 person skill. I have done standby work at motocross - admittedly never at superbikes.

I hope for the sake of the riders and the medics themselves that they will be using qualified ambulance officers / nurses /doctors etc...

As I said I'm not trying to put anyone down however many people have seriously injured / ended their lives while riding motorcycles - especially racing and I don't think that medical treatment can really be 'skimped' with this. You never know when you might need to use advanced life saving skills that a first aider wouldnt know, much like I wouldnt know how to dismantle an engine because im not a mechanic and I couldnt be expected to do it as I dont have the training - sure I could pull a few bits off and have a tinker but to properly do the job I would need the training and experience.

9zer0, certinaly no offense taken by me re your remarks. Ideally all in attendance would be trained nurses, docs, parapedics etc but if they can't get them then isn't a person with a 1st aid certificate better than nothing?

Honestly, no. Going by the 'mechanism of injury' as we call it - these guys are going to be doing I suppose in excess of 250+kmh, meaning the potential for them to come off and receive a spinal injury is possible, we have special equipment and training including extrication to remove these people from harm and get them to hospital under priority conditions - not meaning lights and sirens and 100 miles an hour, I have been in the back of a van doing about 40kmh for about 25ks once with a young kid with a spinal injury on board. One wrong move with a spinal injury can make the difference between walking and not walking, and I know that if I didnt have the training and experience that I do, I certainly wouldn want to take such massive responsibility.

This is just one of many possible incidents that I could talk about - also what if someone has a heart attack in the crowd for instance and you dont have access to a defbrillator (early defibrilation is absolutely vital for succesful resuscitation) or airway management equipment - also vitally important.

I hear ya re the spinal injury, would rather avoid it if possible and would certianly be on a 2 way looking for someone better equipped to handle it, re the heart attack victim, what's the point of even learning CPR if the only option (as you seem to indicate) for treatment is the defribulator? Again no argument a defrib is far better than my manual CPR but again surely i'm better than nothing?

No offense 9zer0 but if I read what you're saying I might as well wipe my arse with this 1st aid certificate it seems.

9zer0, i have read your posts and just want to clarify that, yes im a registered nurse currently praticing.

i was informed today that we are not there for the public but only for the riders.

The education session that is on the tuesday nite prior to super bikes is to teach those volunteers how to correctly remove and put insitu a collar, considering that I mainly take them off and not place them on.

First up Mick - your first aid cert is worth so much more than that - YOU with your newly found skills CAN and WILL make a difference to so many lives just by helping as little as one person, dont ever forget that it is very important to have your first aid certificate - in fact I think it should be mandatory BEFORE you apply for a driving test. Often when we are called to a job and there is a first aider there already it can be very helpful - the last fatal mva I attended was not a double fatal because of the brave actions of a young first aider that came across the scene.

My concern here was I thought they might be manning the track using first aiders only - motorsport being the inherently dangerous sport it is, I was also thinking along the lines of insurance etc....

Foxy thanks for clearing that up - I thought it a bit odd that they would hire first aiders only for such an event, its good to know there will be some medical guidance! Sounds like it will be a great day and I hope it is event free for you and the volunteers attending!!

Is in Germany I found out whilst doing the course, you also need to have a fully stocked first aid kit or there is a fine, hazard a guess that the former would not be a prerequisite for international drivers though.

9zer0, as a first aider I might still not be suitable, am happy to offer my assistance especially for free camping and trackside views but would certinaly hope i'm not the be all and end all when it comes to crash assistance, scary thought that
