Trackifying a road bike

Hi All,

Just considering my options, if you were going to setup a road bike for the track (not racing), basically looking at keeping the cost of an off as low as possible, what would you do ?

Obviously race fairings, but what about stuff like removing insturments or is it better to keep them than try to fit aftermaket stuff (tacho etc).

Looking for ideas at the moment to see if its worth doing rather than selling and buying something already setup.

I've been thinking along the same lines recently.

I reckon a good way of minimizing the cost of a minor spill is to have a bike that is not 'cosmetically perfect' in the first place.

For the actual minimizing of damage, checkout RG crash protectors....you can put those suckers all over your bike.

Another good idea, is to change your standard 'lightweight' engine cases for something that might even survive an off!

Spending as little as possible maybe something along the following lines.......... Remove all standard bodywork, remove all lights and indicators at standard connectors, Remove all unneccessary cosmetic items ie; rubber flaps/covers, noise suppression engine covers 9some models), and anything else not essential for the operation of the bike. Leave standard fairing bracket and instrument cluster adjust suspension accordingly and go and have a ball. If you really want to be a good boy/girl, remove the coolant and lockwire it so you don't fcuk up a ride day if you come off! :wink: HTH

Raceglass,squashed preloved can , oggie knobs, swingarm pickup knobs, preloved tank and that about covers it if you have a huge one it will be off to ebay for whatever it is you need.

engine covers are 100 bucks us so i just stayed wiith the stock ones...sundries like barends and stuff i would worry about when and if it happens.

ohh yeh i paid 500 bucks for the glass and had someone else fit it but it seems good stuff.

It's not the damage to the engine covers themselves you have to worry about...it's what sits behind the covers that matters. :D

can get woodcraft or nrc covers and the nrc ones arent all that hard to get in aus, i still try to keep it shiney....err white at the moment side up. :D

was feeling better when i watched it slapping though.

if you go to those high speed high load tracks like eastern creek or willowbank or pi and you have a nasty you could do a fair bit of damage as there is a lot of speed involved when it lets go.

The race stand pickups have saved my day before for what they are the take a hiding and keep the swingarm off the deck and i have thought about solid pegs and the cheapest option for rearsets seems to be valtermoto jackup plates didnt get a price but they will lift the whole lot 20mm and back 20mm and solidmount pegs which look like grippy jobs and your away....can get gilles peg conversions too.

thanks guys, all good info, it the 636 proves difficult to move I may just keep it as a track bike. Must admit I hadn't thought of the engine covers, already got oggys and swingarm pickups so, see how we go.

hey Beryl, is that your 636 with the white race glass ? can I ask how much ?
