Stock or Custom when buying/selling

What do you believe is the best when buying a bike or selling / trading a bike. To look for a stock standard one or one that has been customised,
pipe screen polished etc , all the wiz bang aftermarket gear ?.

Some believe an untouched bike is better less chance of it being thrashed
etc and some say what the hell if its got aftermarket gear it saves me paying for it afterwards anyway.

Also do you think as a trade you get more for it if its stock ?

Personally, the more aftermarket bits (i.e. Exhaust, screen, seat cowl etc) the better. "Bolt-on's" only though...

Wear I draw the line on customisation is when they've modifed the frame, or painted the fairings/tank in non-standard colours.

I bought mine bog-stock but would have liked an Akra, double bubble etc and woudld have paid a bit more for it...

I know that when I upgrade I'll be looking for a scoot with the obligatory pipe etc. No matter if its stock or custom I look to see weather its been thrashed which I don't think is such a big deal as long as its been well maintained. I agree with Dave about the paint. An otherwise standard bike with custom paint says to me its been for a long trip down the road at one stage or another.

the thought has crossed my mind but at this stage I'm not .
Rest asured Dan when the time does come it will be dead stock and the
bits will be offered to you.

I do believe though that if you do trade a bike in you get not 1c more for
any extras that are on the bike

If I was buying a bike it would need to be standard, or very close to it.

As for selling a bike, I also believe you are best to return it to standard and on-sell the parts. They don't really add any value to your bike at all, but a few bits and pieces (eg. aftermarket pipe or tinted screen) may make a good selling point.

imho

in a trade-in situation...a bike dealer will not give you a zac more
for the can or dubbub or tiny indicators that you fitted at great expense
however
with a private sale if the buyer is really keen on the bike and your mods
you may get a bit more (at most several hundred dollars)

The common add ons add appeal imho, a Zorst,knobs or Screen.

But i remember test riding a 9r with Braided lines & rear sets & thinking that maybe it had been "flogged" so I passed it up.

Besides "Losti" ebay all the good bits it should get you some extra cash. That wont add to sale price.

Standard stuff for me! Including the un-cut fender I don't mind paying a bit more for bling but definitely want the standard included.

I just think the kawasaki engineers had come great lengths to build a good bike so it is the most optimum performance. I actually put back my stock pipe and it is more fun to ride i.e. listening to the engine whirr, induction. So musical!

i'd go standard so u can tell it hasn't been in a bad accident.

Depends on you're knowledge level.

If you don't know that much about modifying bikes, then you're better off going for a clean stock bike. You can easily end up with somebody else's poorly/incompletely done modifcations.

I went to look at a bike recently, which had a bigbore kit etc etc etc, engine started/ran well, other mods were ok. Took one look at the front of the engine and basically walked away from it.

The guys had 1133 cc'd a GSX1100ET motor, with upgraded valves, cams, welded crank, beefed up clutch, engine looked immaculate. But they forget to install an oil cooler, and these motors glaze their bores and destroy their alternators, if the oil gets too hot. Took the motor out to redline and puffs of smoke(rebuild). Guarantee that if you ran a multimetre over the alternator outputs that they would have been spiking constantly.

don't think it makes any difference to the price at all.

but good aftermarket bits make the bike more appealing and I reckon it'll sell quicker privately.
One of the reasons I bought the bike I did was for the full titanium muzzy system.

Yep stocky for me aftermarket pipes ok , i think you are better of doing any mods yourself to what you are happy with not someone elses idear of whats cool or works for them
