My Crash. Pics included.

Sun Oct 30, 2005 9:45 pm

Had a big post about this just before the big KSRC Server failure of '05, but here is an abridged version.

I was out testing at QR on Wednesday, in the wet on slicks, went for the brakes a little to late going in to turn 4 to avoid braking in a puddle. Was going about 170-180 kph, remember popping up and touching the lever, hearing a loud bang and sliding for a long time. Damaged the leathers I had borrowed from Phil at Highside (big rap for those guys, thankyou!), and left some nice big long scrape marks down the track at QR.

After picking myself up and finally getting the bike back to the pits, I gave the rear peg some hammer relief and rigged up a less-broken clutch lever I had in the tool box with some hair ties and took it out for the last session.

I have hurt my shoulder, but it is healing OK so no medical intervention is needed, but the bike has some damage:

Broken clutch lever,
broken gear lever,
bent n grinded peg,
quite a lot of fairing and rear cowl damage,
broken fairing mount,
bent and sorta broken race stand pickup,
grinded rear axle,
bent left bar and bar end,
some scrapes on the tank,
and some bent fairing bolts.

However the worst thing is, I just pulled of the top triple-clamp and I think the forks may be a little bent. I had to really bang it off with a slide hammer and a nylon hammer, and when I finally got it off (15mins of effort later) I tried to dummy fit it and found that one of the fork legs is mis-aligned from the hole in the triple-clamp by about 3mm. Sound like a fork problem?

I am going to try and just get it back together for the race meeting next weekend, and then sort it further after that. It seemed to travel in a straight line for the last session, so should be ok I hope. I do have a lot of work to do and not a lot of time to do it.

What fun!!!! :D

might be a bent triple clamp rather than a bent fork you could be lucky, could try dave kellets frame bending services further down the track when you have some dollars......you know after the kids grow up and leave home. :D

   Yeah that's right Bob, even then they will no doubt cost me too much anyway. If it wasn't for those little buggers I could have a 10R racebike!!!!  8)

Don't get confused on me Brett.....

Cambo, you aren't kidding about that dirt, I must have picked up about 20kg in mud from that crash. I just high-pressure hosed the bike, and the fairings, and I am still finding more!

dont worry about that dirt....plenty more to come out. :D no doubt, next time you take it on the track, you will "hear" the dirt.......
best of luck gettin it together. if i lived nearby would be happy to help. love puttin 'em back together

Bummer about that Hemi, I know your pain..

I did the same at turn 1 at E.C. although I made it to the kitty litter. I brought enough of that crap home with me to cover a garden bed... :-)

Straightening the forks shouldn't be too expensive so if thats the worse thing its not too bad.

I'll look through my box of zx7r parts and see if I have anything you may need.

Hemi Man , you never do anything by halves do ya Mate . Glad you didn't hurt yourself . Good luck with the repairs

You put the Mickey on yourself mate... only two months ago I remember you saying you'd never crashed, now you've come off twice!

Good to see your OK man! Sorry about the bike. Let me know if you want a handle bar weight and a straight handle bar in good condition.

Looking at the Winton track day on the 11th Nov. Put the 7 round there, hope your up and running soon bloke.

Thanks a heap guys, the main things I need are some spares at the moment. Greenmeanie helped me out with a left hand bar and clip on bracket, and a couple of levers. So I guess I am looking for some more spares depending on price etc.

Levers
Bars
Footrests/rearsets
gear levers
bar ends
clip brackets
fairing brackets
master cylinders
calipers
and another set of wheels would be good too.

Thanks again.

Sometimes the forks twist in the triple clamps. Try loosening the lower triple bolts and it may come back into shape. When MBP and myself went and looked at his bike before purchasing, it seemed it had bent forks so he got it real cheap. Got it home and loosened the triples and it sprung back into shape. he was very happy.

Wot 'e sed.

Thanks for the advice. It turned out even easier. When I pulled the front wheel off, the triple clamp just lined up perfectly! Bloody strong bike these things..... Kinda makes me feel better about how heavy it is.
