Hi all, can anyone tell me of decent bike mechanics in gold coast/Brisbane area that are excellent with carby's and tuning.
I have a '09 zx250F, and it needs a little TLC with the carby, wont start very easily, and also need a few small things looking at. Am really after someone that specialises in carby tuning and working with Kawasaki's, not really keen on a back yard guy unless he is reputable. I have replaced spark plugs, can actually start it, but does need some work i believe in the carby area.
Dont mind traveling to a decent mechanic.

Bit of a hike from Gold Coast but the only guy i would trust to work on a carby bike. Plus he is a old school kwaka guy.

Would Darcy also do valve clearances?, or is he just a carby guru.
I've been told, that not only the carby can be the issue, if valve clearances arent correct, this can also lead to hard starting.
I have a bike doctor coming to look at it hopefully early next week, if he doesnt work out, i will certainly be going to Darcy.

Could anyone please recommend a good bike oil for the KX250F, i am using Motul in a lot of my road bikes, do they do a decent dirt bike oil, or is there a better quality oil for such a bike. Dont wont something over expensive, but would certainly like something that will be protecting the engine inside, without breaking my wallet in half every time i need to change it.
Should i get or use the K&N re-useable oil filter...or just buy the replaceable unit...is it worth the extra money for a cleanable type. Wont be racing or using the bike every weekend, so oil changes will only be done when the oil looks like it needs to be, depending on actual riding being done.

mate - old-school blokes do everything. There is not a bike mechanic in the world who is just a 'carby guru'. Valve clearances are often the cause of hard starting - its because small-capacity dirt bikes just like your 250, get the ring flogged out of them (high rpm) and this causes the valves to wear the valve-seats down - which over time, reduces the clearance below spec ( and often to the point where the inlet valve is being held off the seat) - which in turn results in a loss of cylinder compression.

The classic symptom of valve clearances needing to be fixed, is a bike that can be very difficult to start when cold, but starts really easily once its been warmed up.

Motul oil is fine - I use 5100 semi-synth in my 12 and have done for years. In a small-capacity high-revving dirt bike, you might be better off using a full-synth, for the better protection it provides in engines with tight tolerances that are regularly operated at high rpm. Getting the best protection for your motor pays off in the long run, even if the oil costs a bit more than semi-synth.

Quick dumb question....
do i need to use a specific 'dirt bike' grade oil, or can i use the same MOtul full synth i would of put in the roady...eg: 7100.
Just unsure of dirt bike oils, if they are actually different, not trying to open up the good oil bad oil scenario either...
Just after a good brand that is generally used in these type bikes.

You can try Dave from Logan Mobile Motorcycle Mechanics - $60 call out and $88 per hour and does it all in your driveway. He is old skool Kwakka as well.

7100 full synth will be fine in your dirt bike
