Hey guys i have already posted this in a different area of the forum but after i posted it i realised this might be the best area for it.

Can i just find out what the on going expenses of owning a bike are.

E.g Tyres, mechanical problems, rego, just the day to day things needed for budgeting to run a bike.

I just want to make sure I can afford to own one and make sure it works with my monthly budget.

fuel $40 a week if you use it everyday
tyres worse case scenario $350 and last maybe 6000km if your on a bike with balls
servicing bout $200 every 6000km prob $500 for a major every 12000km
if its a new bike you wont need to worry about maintenance or day to day.

A guestimate

Petrol - 600cc will give you 200-220km & 250cc 250km+ from a full tank.
Dealer servicing - minor up to $200, Major up to $500
Tyres (road use) longevity 5-7000 km, price depending on what you use as a base, starting from $350 (front & rear) onwards
Tyre puncture kit - $50
Lubes (chain maintenance) 3L bottle kero + can of chain spray oil will last you 5000km (cleaning/lubing every 600km) $30-40. Handy always to have an additional 1L of bike oil for top up if required between servicing $15-20.
Rear bike stand, not essential but handy for doing chain maintenance $90
Rego upto $250.
CTP, fire/theft or comprehensive insurance, that dependent on you (age, bike capacity, NCB etc), shop around.

Try not to skimp on protective gear, the decent stuff will last longer and protect you better!

yeah thats no problem one condition the missus gave me was go hard on the protective gear HAHA, nothing scares me more then seeing guys with singlets and shorts on a bike!

I guess a lot depends on what kind of bike u plan to get. The bigger the cc, the higher the costs. Also how & where u ride will make a difference.

Commuting puts more km on the bike, but it's generally easier on the consumables (except chain care). Scratching in the hills means more tyre and brake wear, plus the higher revs may mean you'll go for higher grade oil & get worse fuel economy.

Harder compound tyres are cheaper & last longer, but don't have the profile or grip levels for the twisties.

A well maintained chain should last 30,000km, but neglect it and you could be looking at only 10,000. On bigger bikes a chain & sprocket set will be over $230

For servicing, with a few simple tools you should be able to do most minor stuff (plugs, filters & oil change). Then u only need to pay for the major service for valve clearances.

on the 650r about $20 to fill the tank and gets about 280klm riding out to putty and putting a few laps on 10 mile.

the tyres i have on are bridgestones bt21 and dual compound sport touring and so far have gotten just over the 10,000 km on them and looking at arround $200 for the front when i replace in another 1-2000km,rear will see atleast another 5-10,000km probably $300.

servicing; minor was arround $100 as i did one myself,but was $265 when kawasaki did it
major un known yet,roughly $500 would be my guess

chain and spocket like new still

rego for the 650r $355 green slip ,rta

insurance is arround $80 a month and found that swann insurance is the cheapest for me

so far for the years riding and 10,000 km i would say that i have spent $2000+

Put it this way....they arnt as cheap as what everyone thinks. Put you learn to live with the expense and adapt.

Hhrrrmmm im still on my stock set of tyres and have does 11,500km's on them and that included a big 1800km lap of tassies twisty bits.

11.5.k @ out of OEM BT016?

My OEM BT016 @ 5900km have 5-10% front & 15% rear left on the back, run @ road pressures. The front sides are worse for wear.

I envisage them being cactus after the Bylong loop (550km)
