Big bloke on a smaller bike

Tue May 31, 2011 1:49 am

Hey all,
I'm new to the forum and have started the process of getting my license together and taking the plunge into the world of motorbikes.
So, my problem is this: I love the look of the Ninja 250R but I'm rather hesitant to purchase it because I am 6'5" and 110kg, I don't even know if the damn thing could support me!

Any advise would be brilliant

Kawa has the LAMS approved 650! Bigger in size and would suit you much better over the life of your restricted licence and maybe even longer!

Defintely do as above mate... Versys, ninja 650 and the er6 all come in lams and are pretty well put together machines! Go check them out :)

Yup, get a bigger bike you'll be glad you did! Then while you're still learning you can work out which ZX10R or ZX6R you want for when you upgrade and get a REAL sports bike 8)

Thanks so much!
I'll start doing my homework on them all to figure out which suits me the most.

Now it's just a matter of doing Q-Ride and getting gear and I'm set

Not to mention (after a bit of reason) put a substantial hole in my pocket compared to the 250 :( .

How horrid the life of a student is

After reading that post Id forgotten how cheap new the 250R now is. When I had mine I was 100kg and about 6'1" and got used to riding it but no more than 400km in a day. Whatever bike you end up with you will need to get used to a riding position. Will the bike be able to cope with your height n weight, yep for sure, will you be comfy on it I dont know. Look around, Im sure there may be some Suzuki (ducks n weaves) GS500's out there 2nd hand thats are LAMS approved and a much bigger bike :)

my son is your height and he ended up with a 400 supermotard. looked at the dual sports (KLR650) but was a bit intimidated by their size.
he's thinking of a 600 next but after riding one reckons he'll need to move the pegs.

z650

*I say that since I'm 6'4 and I find the size perfect, plus the bike could keep me happy long after I get my full licence.

Out of left field, but a KLE500? Bloody good size for a big boy, only 500cc, but a twin cylinder so quite smooth and has plenty of poke and good handling. Cheap 2nd hand too if price is a factor. The Ninja 650 in a lams, or a Versys in a lams if they do them, would be brilliant if the budget allows.

Also, an older but well looked after GPz500S is a fecking good bike too!
