Near miss - stupid dumb ass driver

Postby Megsnitro » Sun Apr 10, 2011 2:04 pm

So heading out this morning to meet some friends for a ride nearly didn't make it.

Went through Mulbring and was continuing on to Maitland in a 90 zone when a dopey bitch pulled out of the Cessnock T Intersection and straight across my path. Luckily the car behind her saw me coming and didn't move up so I could swing round behind her but it was frighteningly close. Then I discovered you can't flip the bird and get on the horn at the same time!
:finga:

Took me a while to calm down but ended up have a great day riding the back roads to Singleton and back.

A tip to other new riders in here, read and remember what the experienced riders say and do in the forum. I think reading about how others have gotten out of ( & sometimes into) trouble that meant I had a near miss and not a serious off.

Well done on avoiding the hit.

Remember that car drivers are looking for gaps in the traffic - it's not an excuse but that's what happens. They don't expect to see a bike in that gap and most of the time have no idea on how to judge the speed of the oncoming bike either. Sucks big time but you've avoided going "splat" so thats a good thing :D

Other times they're not looking for a gap - just couldn't give a flying figtree :kuda:
I don't like the term insane - I prefer mentally hilarious!

but a kick in the door does wonders ;)

My 2c..
always expect the unexpected and have an idea of where you will go if things do go to shit
place yourself where you can be seen (on the occasion they do look)
know who and whats around you at all times

regardless of who's right or wrong you will always come off second best
It all comes down to how you ride it.....

+2 on the swerve.Makes ya re evaluate the way you to things when you get confronted by stupidity out there.
Something i've found while riding as apposed to driving is how amazingly calm i can be when a dickhead driver pulls out or does something stoopid in front of me on the bike.If i'm driving the red mist comes over me and i have the shits for five minutes. On the bike i just take it as a given that drivers do stupid things and begrudgingly accept it and just ride accordingly.
Month or so ago i got clipped by a goverment bus moving straight over into my lane while i was half way along side of him.He indicated and went without looking ,i backed right off as the gap between the front of the bus and the medium strip was closing fast,he clipped my mirror and nearly sent my bars into a twist.I calmly pulled up next to him at the lights and he was all apologies but i had a calmness that i can't explain.

Yikes - squished by bus, glad it was not serious! I get what you mean, I felt like I had time to look for a way out, spot it and get in the space all very calm and orderly, but after I was through I wanted to strangle the driver. I was really aggro and had to calm (& slow) down! Driver is just lucky I was not in my Hilux.

For Road riding Scan ahead..... Scan ahead ..... SCAN ... SCAN.... SCAN! oh & always leave a good buffer + when you have spare time practice weaving & emergency braking... it can pay off when you least expect it & is fun to do :D

I guess for me its about not having time to have the shits with anyone when they cut you off as unless you pull over and vent you have to keep concentrating on whats in front of you and as Rob said SCAN SCAN SCAN.Totally different mindset to driving a car.I think its why cage drivers don't get it.Unless they have ridden a bike they don't understand what they have done thats so bad half the time.

And always assume they are going to pull out!
Being in the right never stopped anyone from being dead! ;)
+1 on door's and mirror's, it's help's make them a more observant driver!

Ahh, Possum nails it.

On my commute (160k round trip), it is not unusual for this unfortunatly, however now when it happens i am unfased as it is just part of the ride. Not a good thing i know but i wouldnt/couldnt ride if i let it consume me.

I enjoy riding and am willing to take the "Risk" , just got to be smart, scan everything, always know whats next or behind you, consider escape routes ie;breakdown and lanesplitting, and practice emergency breaking when you can.

There will be the day when you thank a driver for noticing you in a little self made trouble  , mostly speed related. Of course this has never happened to me ;) .

Any miss is a good miss, well done, keep calm and carry on.
