Ok, kerosene is good for cleaning the chain, the ONLY reason to lube a sealed roller chain ( I.e. o, x,w ring chain ) is purely for lubricating the seals.
So really you should carefully apply in-between the link plates and wipe off the excess.
What I do is carry a can of chain lube and Everytime fill my fuel tank I spray a bit on a few spots I can easily get too. It spreads and over time the whole chain gets enough.
But don't be too worried about lubing it all the time, the rollers themselves are self-contained in grease, it is only the seals that need the grit cleaned away and lubricated. Do not use penitrine such as crc, wd40, inox or similar products as this will penetrate past the sealing rings and destroy the grease in the roller.

Thanks for the advice Jonno! I bought some kerosene on the weekend and will give it a nice clean this week sometime.

Correctamondo, he didn't mention he had one and I doubt if he has an aluminum sprocket fitted which doesn't suit road riding applications IMO
How many extra km's would you get by lubing an alloy sprocket I wonder?

it's just less obvious with steel sprockets
