RTA and demerit points

Postby zx-10r » Fri Apr 17, 2009 4:24 pm

posted this on another forum and just wondering what you guys think

just wondering if anyone knows what the rules are with demerit points (in nsw) if you have p2 car licence but unrestricted bike licence. Just say you are riding your bike and get an infringement where demerit points apply how does it affect the number of points on your licence. P2 is 7 i think and unrestricted is 12. Anyone know becuase the rta website is just full of shit.

Points accrued on your "p" license only apply to your "p" license but points accrued on your full license apply to both licenses.

Pretty sure the RTA considers you to have a 'traffic record' not a bunch of separate tallies for each licence. If you accrue more demerit points than your licence allows that licence will be suspended.

IE if you get 8 demerit points your P2 bike licence would get suspended but your unrestricted car licence would be intact.

Huh? If you accrue 5 demerit points on your P2 license you should still have 0 demerit points (12 available points) on your unrestricted license (Mrwasabi recently lost is bike P's but not his car license under these conditions). If you accrue 5 demerit points on your unrestricted license you will have 5 demerit points accrued against both your provisional and unrestricted licenses (i.e. 2 points available on your provisional license and 7 points available on your unrestricted license). I think ;)

What i have been told by other people who i have asked said something along the lines; if you have P license with 7 points and unrestricted with 12 points , if you get 7 demerit points while on eithe bike or car you will lose your P licence. You then only have 5 points left on your unrestricted. This way you could lose your P licence and still drive your unrestricted but with only 5 points left on it. this is when rta regulations become confusing becuase if i walk into my nearest rta they will probably tell me something completely different than the website or another rta office.

Pretty sure I remember a bloke with red Ps for car and full bike. Got done for 63 in a 60 in the car and was told he cant drive or ride because of the automatic loss for red Ps. Will double check that scenario.
See here, young man,
From Walgett to the sea,
From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh,
There's none can ride like me.

I hope i am wrong as well...but i'm 99% sure that's the case. Because people used to jipp the system and had all of their demerits added together, e.g. 4 red P's and 12 for full license making it 16 all up until you will get a letter of suspension. So now the RTA has caught up with it and the licenses are seperate in demerits but if you loose one license you can't ride or drive with the other.

For a example:

If you have a full Rider's license and get caught for speeding you can loose up to 12 points until you get suspended

If you have a Red P's for CAR you get suspended straight away for speeding and this will mean you can't rider either.

Visa Versa. Please correct me if i am wrong, i don't work in the RTA so i'm not 100% certain either. Just make sure you don't get done on reds for speeding.

Cheers
Kev
