Stripped ZX10 not starting

Postby NewbieZX9 » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:22 am

Hey guys,

Bought my 2012 ZX10 back from auction after an unfortunate mishap with a vehicle of the four wheel variety. Apologies before I go on as I realise this is probably a more than redundant issue/question that comes up over and over, but any way, found it at the auction started it gave it a rev smiled and loaded it up.

After getting home I stripped all the body work off (right hand side faring and headlight were stuffed) and removed all the tail piece and all the rear light assembly and indicator components. Once done I put the key in to see my now naked pre track faired ZX10 to give me another smile before I quit for the day. With little or no effort once again it kicked over and ran ... but after a couple of seconds conked out. From then on didn’t want to start again and I didn’t want to keep trying in fear I’d kill the battery (although this may be partially or even solely responsible for the lack of start).

Before getting into attempting to self diagnose and check battery for full charge and everything, is there anything electronically in the headlight or rear tail light assembly I probably shouldn’t have taken off in my haste to remove her clothes?

I’ll try to throw some photos in to illustrate but the bikes basically just got nothing on but he tank, hopefully they upload Cheers!

... sorry also, what makes me suspect it may be battery related is the dash blanks out while it’s turning trying to kick.

Cheers!

hmm.?
Not sure about the 2012, May be something to do with the electrics and its checking for headlight / tail light etc.?
Plug those back in and see what happens.
Did you check / remove the tip over sensor.?

Hey buddy, no didn’t nick that off yet, that was another issue I suspected but have partially dismissed (for the time being anyway) because its started about three times since the accident. Only time I had issues starting was immediately after I got hit. Probably worth disconnecting/bypassing it anyway in case, I’ve read in other threads about bikes in general after a tip over they can start and run for a few seconds until the sensor engages/cuts the bike off

Stating the obvious but check all your connectors too. My bro was riding my ZX9 from Sysdney to Brisbane when it started to cut out and eventually wouldn't start. Told him to do this first thing, turned out that in his cleaning up of the bike he had inadvertantly loosened off a connector that eventually separated. It's a cheap starting point

My prime suspect is the battery. But first check the battery leads/earth etc all secure - might have been disconnected at some point?
Next either grab a known good batt from another bike/buddy/etc or as a minimum, jump leads and see if that makes any difference?

All the electronics are linked up together. Weird things happen when you start removing stuff.
If you haven't cut any wires if be plugging all lights and stuff back in, see if it runs. If so, then start removing things one at a time.

On my 06, once I removed the blinkers the lap timer didnt work properly. Strange.

Check the fuses, my gsxr 1000 blew a fuse on the track & it turned over, dash played up, lights worked etc, turned out to be as simple as the engine fuse!
Looking forward to the quiet life !

My headlight globe blew on my 15 zx10r and almost straight away the esd (electronic steering damper) warning light came on.
Replaced headlight globe and back to normal.
Non start sounds like lack of bits plugged in as wattie said.
